Hi there its been a while since I looked at linuxmce and I am thinking of dipping a toe in the water again and try create a hybrid setup that I can play around with.

I am eventually going to add some of the home automation however I am in the middle of moving so that won't be for a few months.

I'm looking for some advice on hardware and what is the best route. The wiki pages suggest items that appear to be a few years old and I was wondering if they are still relevant?

Is it still a case of linux MCE being 32bit? If so I will leave it at 4 gig memory.

Can anyone recommend a suitable motherboard + CPU + gfx card for a hybrid setup that I may wish to expand in the future perhaps?

The main aim is to use it for media at first then extend to some of the interesting home automation solutions when funds allow :-)


I am really looking forward to adding things to my shopping cart on ebuyer etc! I just want to make sure the pieces I add are hopefully compatible.

Ahh thanks for that. I wasn't thinking about the second NIC totally forgot. I guess the riser card could be added but then again it is quite limited.

Any ideas what would make a decent basic core? Are there any retails still selling LinuxMce Systems. I remember the Fiire systems but I think they went under.

Hi I tried LinuxMCE a while ago and really liked the idea of the project, however I think it was too early for me with my limited knowledge of Linux and how it work regarding hardware.

I am thinking of testing the water again as I really love the feature set of LinuxMCE. I am willing to splash a bit of cash to get some hardware more easy to use as my last setup was slightly under powered.

Would something like this be worth looking at as I really like it's looks:

Coupled with say a AMD Athlon X2 5000+ Dual Core CPU which retail at about £30 and some memory etc...

Just wondered if that would be ok. I just saw that it is a Geforce 6150 which is quite dated but I seem to remember it was quite well supported.

I have offered my services a number of times but got the feeling that people dont want my services. I offered to assist in the fixing of the TV tuner crashing as I would love to get that fixed but the person who is in charge of this bug never replied. I posted a specific message on mantis stating such a message.

Tried restoring a backup of Xorg.conf and deleting it both no good still did the same.

Had a quick scan of the two log files but couldn't see anything out of the ordinary. When i can ssh in I will do to copy and paste them onto here. At work at the moment so cant really fiddle that much with it unfortunatly.

Will try post the logs later on.

Users / Reinstalled the nvidia drivers now got a problem

Just reinstalled my nvidia drivers as for some reason it reverted back to default the ones.

Now after the dcerouter login i just get a black screen with a flashing cursor.

Tried pressing the numbers to change the resolution and input connection but no look.

Then tried holding shift down when it beeps, it doesn't run the AV Wizard though it just shows the same black screen with flashing cursor in the top right.

Then I tried to replace my xorg.conf with xorg.conf.backup but only got the same results.

I think I may just need to get the AVWizard to run but not 100% on how to force this.

That sound like a way to fix it?

No its all in ratio but its just borders at the top like your watching a wide screen film on a normal television.

Hi we just got a new Hyundai Imagequest TV which has a whole plethora of connections and is a 32" widescreen system

Im not sure what is the best way to connect my machine up to this new TV to get the best result. At the moment i use the vga cable as it was easiest to get working. However when I watch DVDs or videos that are widescreen there are really big black borders at the top and bottom. I mustn't of picked the correct setup for my TV when I ran the AV wizard.

Heres the connectors that my TV has:

TV-out
Scart
VGA
HDMI
Composite
Analog

My Graphics card has the following outputs:

VGA
DVI
TV-out

Im thinking that a dvi to hdmi will be the best way to connect it up but im not too sure. Also I would like to remove the black borders from some of the TV and DVD/Videos that i watch if possible.

THe interface appears to cover the whole screen nicely unlike films that I play back.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated

Hi guys I was just wondering if people could recommend a remote.

I was trying to get the Hauppauge one that connects to my TV card to work but this isn't that good and some buttons dont work.

I know with some fiddling i may be able to get it to work but I dont have that that much spare time at the moment so it would be easier if i could just but one that just works.

I will also need the receiver. How well do the buttons of a windows remote map to the LinuxMCE software?

I would be interested in seeing what other people are using. The fiire remote looks good but is pricey i was thinking a bit cheaper at first.

I think mine is also doing this too. Im not 100% as I had a lot of videos all in the same name I will double check tonight. ALthough im pretty sure i have seen something on the forums previously about this.
