No disrespect intended, so please do not flame back.

I am curious as to the timetable for the release of the 0710 version of LMCE. I presume that it will be released shortly. Note that the next version of K/Ubuntu is scheduled to be released on April 24, 2008, approximately 100 days from today?

Once again, not complaining as I am not the developer nor a tester, just an interested user in a developing software package that should gain tremendous traction this year, and entice users to abandon Winblows as a platform for home automation and htpc purposes.

Best wishes to the developers and testers, and looking forward to the release of LMCE 0710.

Hi Colin,

We are testing the MSI MS-7329 motherboard (see link to manual below) this has on-board 6150 graphics and an HDMI port;

We're running this board at 720p over component & HDMI and it performs beautifully. The board supports 1080p too but we have not tested that yet... will give feedback when we do ;-)

We've tested it with UI2 + Overlay and it works great... but I don't think we've tested UI2 + transparency. I'll take a look at that on Monday and post an update here then.

Have you had an opportunity to test it with UI2 + transparency yet? If so, any success?

Just curious as I (and sure others) were waiting for your next post.

Care to share the directions that you followed so that we can try them here in the States? Many have determined that it cannot be properly used for the satellite channels that people here otherwise use sasc-ng with MythTV while in LinuxMCE. Can't hurt to review your steps, and see, whether, just maybe its a little different and might work. Note, there are other steps that we have to take over here to get our MythTV working.

You know, it just hit me. What I really want to know is what brand and model case they are using. We can use our own motherboards in these cases, and the cost could be a lot less prohibitive. Why do we need to use the same exact components that Fiire has chosen? Can't we find a motherboard that would fit the bill?

Users / Trident VESA PC in UK

Folks:

I had looked into a company in the UK called Trident Microsystems (similar name to the old graphics chipset and graphics card manufacturer) regarding their computer, the VESA PC, which is strikingly similar in features and appearance to the Fiire Station VESA option (1" fanless wall mount version). They are willing to ship their computers stateside, however, they charge 563 GBP, which when converted to US Dollars, results in the following charges, not including shipping:

563 British Pound(s) = 1128.71 US Dollar(s)

1 USD =to 0.4988 GBP
1 GBP = 2.00481 USD

So, it would cost $1,128.71, plus S&H, not to mention that they might even charge VAT.

The Fiire Station on the other hand, is distributed by a San Francisco based operation and they charge $899.00 plus S&H.

So, if you are interested in the wall mount option (or back of the TV attached version of a MD), then it appears that you should consider the Fiire Station. Thought I had something when I had come across that UK VESA PC, but, it clearly will cost too much.

Installation issues / Installation of 2nd CORE (Backend) running MythTV in NA???

This past weekend, I got LinuxMCE up and running from both the DVD as well as from the CDs (just had to experiment).

I was curious, can a second Core PC (for exampled, a second MythTV Backend) be installed and hooked up to the network (either directly to the CORE or through a switch) not running LinuxMCE, but rather, just a separate linux box? With MythTV?

I am interested in running software on the second machine so as not to interfere with or interrupt the LinuxMCE Core from performing its distributive processes.

Is it possible to install VDR and related plugins, after installing LinuxMCE - without breaking LinuxMCE - rather being limited to the MythTV package that comes with LinuxMCE?

I saw some threads which had broached this subject, but nothing since LinuxMCE 0704 came out. Anyone have any experience installing VDR after LinuxMCE?

Installation issues / Problems logging into Administrator Mode after DVD Install

I had installed LinuxMCE 0704 last night through the DVD Install. Cannot for the life of me get CDs 1 and 2 to install after installing Kubuntu separately. I have installed various distributions of linux over the years, as well as within VMWare, but never switched from MS Win to Linux on a permanent basis. So am not conversant on linux commands.

When I attempt to log into the administrator mode to make changes to my configuration, from the other threads, I had found that the Username is supposed to be: linuxmce, and that the Password is also supposed to be: linuxmce. Entered that information and I got a message that essentially told me that I had entered an invalid username and/or password.

Does anyone know what username and password to enter after installing LinuxMCE through the DVD method?

Installation issues / DVB-S Tuner in Media Director or Core Only?

I have read through the Installation and User Forum, and am left with at least 3 questions. First will be addressed here, second and third in separate threads. Sorry if this is not proper, just thought it best to start and maintain separate threads for 3 issues.

This first issue, which is in the subject line above, is a question as to whether my Nexus-S DVB-S card will work if it is located in the media director, or does it need to be installed in Core so that MythTV can populate the database? Do not know if with LinuxMCE since the 2 computers are working within the same network I can continue to use a pc near my cable run, or if I have to get the satellite cable moved so that it runs into the closet where I am placing my LinuxMCE Core computer.

To get the right installer from the ISO, do the following on a (fresh) install of kubuntu 0704, in the directory where you placed the ISOs:

mkdir -pv mnt
sudo mount LinuxMCE_0704_CD1.iso mnt/ -o loop
sudo dpkg -i mnt/mce-installer_2.0.1-1_i386.deb
sudo umount mnt
rmdir -v mnt

After that the installer icon should pop up on your desktop.  With a bit of luck you won't be seeing anymore boobs 'till you put some porn on...  

The installer will also allow you to specify alternate network settings.  I have had one or two installs pauze halfway through because they lost the network for some reason, but after restarting the network while the installer was still running (/etc/init.d/networking restart iirc) it simply continued. 

Thank you for this wonderfully simple, yet basic knowledge required to install off of CDs 1 and 2. I only wish that someone had posted this terminal-based information earlier,  whether in these forums or over at the Wiki, I have spent nights trying to install 0704. DVD hang each and every time. Can install Kubuntu 0704 (Feisty Fawn) onto this computer, but had no clue how to get CDs 1 and 2 to work. Now I am on a mission. Thanks.

Looks like we are about to see the 1st revision. Probably some beta testing going on (not that all of us who have been trodding along with 1.0 couldn't be considered beta testers).

Guess I will have to keep tuned, and maybe I will be able to finally get this software working, as advertised.

well, if i said that linuxmce could work as a router and a dhcp server, you don't need any hardware devices for this. maybe you must add some extra rules in linuxmce firewall to allow acces for other computers to internet.

I am sorry but I do not understand your answer. Are you saying that I will not need a router (the actual physical box) after installing linuxmce, in order for my planned hybrid server to communicate with the other pcs in my planned system? Or are you saying that I will still need a router?

Not to hijack your guidance to John here, but, in the system that I am planning, I already have a wireless router acting as a DHCP server (WAF - wife and kids have to have wireless internet access through 2-story concrete house, with concrete walls and slab between 2 levels, so cannot shut off the wireless router). Could I used a wired network (possibly 1 of the new network using AC powerlines in home) with linuxmce while having a DSL adapter card in the same computer acting as my linuxmce hybrid server? Do I need a physical router for this configuration for linuxmce to communicate with other devices, or is it a software solution which obviates the need for an actual physical router device.

Sorry if I have hijacked this thread, but the possibilities of your post fascinate my imagination!

After many installs I was finally able to get the networking straight and with BOTH network cards:

- Clean Ubuntu install
- Ubuntu Updates
- Set Networks

1. Static (Internet - ADSL Gateway and WLAN Router)
2. DHCP Server (Linux MCE)

- Install MCE (i worked out for 2 hours during this time)
- Reboot
- Start MCE (went shopping and came back 2 hours later)

And you know what? I got the WIZARD....sniff, sniff...so happy.

- Set the Wizard preferences
- Grey Screen (oh noooo!)

Change the User Interface, reboot, start MCE, eat dinner

What's next?

Out of curiosity, what hardware do you have? Did you configure as a core or hybrid?

Do you have any wireless network adapters/routers or wired only? If wireless, how did you configure wireless during installation, or after?

I did not see your prior post in this thread, and would love to know what you did, what equipment you had used, and what configuration options you chose.
