hi guys,

sorry for such a really basic question but i can't find any docs or videos about it.

in UI2 Audio, how do you quickly navigate a long list of artists, eg to artists starting with S?

* 0ABCDEF... strip on the right does not seem to be selectable
* A, B, C etc keys on keyboard don't seem to select
* leaving cursor at bottom of list show big blue arrow and scrolls ok, but it is slow
* what bit of magic is needed to change the bigblue arrow into 2 big blue arrows as in videos (and is there more magic to make it 3 or 4 big blue arrows?)

if all of this in in docs somewhere, great.

if not i'm happy to add from the perspective of a new user.

many thanks

regards,
greg johnson

you said the list on the right does not seem to be selectable, it should be.  If not can you do this in the Video Menu?

if you can't I would regen the orbiter to see if for some reason the positions are out of sync

The # of 'blue arrows' is dependent on how far down or up you move the mouse.  When you move the mouse to the lower or upper portion of the screen one arrow will appear, if you keep moving the mouse in the same direction (up or down) additional arrows will appear and the cube will rotate faster.

The quick select letters cannot be highlighted and selected with the keyboard, only the mouse.  The same functionality is available by simply pressing letter keys on the keyboard, the cube will jump to that letter as if you had clicked a letter with the mouse.  To rotate the cube with the keyboard you can use the PGUP and PGDN keys.

This functionality is the same for both Audio and Video lists.

pgup pgdown works on both audio & video
keyboard letter keys work on video only
letter strip selection by mouse works on neither

now that i know what is supposed to happen i'll have a closer look.

many thanks for the quick & comprehensive response.

I can confirm that the letter strip down the right-hand side does not work in video (wherever you click just plonks you somewhere random a little way down from the top), but it seems to work fine in audio.

That's really odd, what's your setup?

I just don't understand why it would work in audio, but not in video.

Zotac ION 330 miniITX (VGA 720P) with vdpau enabled.  I have >500 <1000 videos and around 44000 audio tracks, most have attributes and cover art applied.

The only problem I experience is slow queries in mysql, some of which I've sped up others not.  I've no idea what is causing your problem.

That's very similar to my setup. I'm wondering if there's some ropey video files causing the problems - not only am I having problems with the letter strip, but also with the cube being jerky and generally unresponsive. Again, this is only with videos, everything in audio works great.

I may try removing all my videos at some point, and putting them back on in small batches to see if that's what it is.

Are you using UI2 overlay or alpha blending?  The alpha blending could cause some 'jerky' action on the cube rotation but I can't imagine it would affect using the letters on the side.  Is this a mouse or a gyration mouse you're using?  I'm grasping, but trying to think of things I have seen affect the UI.  My use is with a wireless logitech usb keyboard/mouse.  Both work great.

Try removing the gyro mouse and use a normal usb mouse and see if you have the same problems.

I don't see why this would make a difference seeing as everything is fine in audio, but I'll certainly give it a shot, thanks for the advice.

Well, I tried removing the gyro mouse, and whilst it didn't solve the problem we were talking about, it has stopped the strange behaviour I was seeing with the orbiter crashing when watching TV (and leaving the black imprint on the screen, etc). So that was due to the gyro mouse!
