CRTL-Alt-F1 or CRTL-ALT-F2
Log in, and type ksmserver <enter>
You will receive something like "not installed, enter sudo apt-get install kdebase-workspace-bin"
Do it: sudo apt-get install kdebase-workspace-bin.
It will be installed.
Also do a sudo apt-get install konsole dolphin systemsettings synaptic
After this, CTRL-ALT-F7 and under KDE you will be able to install whatever necessary with synaptic.
It worked for me.
Hope this helps.

EDIT: corrected the systemsetting to systemsettings

Mikel

Installing kdebase-workspace-bin works to me. Thanks! ;)

Your fix works for me as well but the systemsetting brought up an error so that didn't get installed. Anyone no the proper syntax / name for this file?

What did not work for you? Could you provide the error message?

I have don't have the exact message but it couldn't find it. It found all the other files. The main question that needs to be asked is why this situation happened? The desktop worked fine for me before the LMCE installation.

pw44

repeat and report the error.
i will try to reproduce it here and give a feedback.
regarding why parts of the kde vanished, i really don't know. it happened to me too.
maybe one of the developers can answer this.

I did a 2nd installation and had the same results. After finishing with Sarah I tried the kde desktop and recieved the "Could not start ksmserver. Check your installation.". I followed your instructions but systemsetting causes an error: couldn't find package systemsetting. All the other files were installed. I flip back to the kde desktop and nothing has changed. I change back to console and reboot. The kde desktop works but not all the programs are there. Also my sound has stopped working in the desktop where it worked before the LMCE install.

It should be sudo apt-get install systemsettings

Right. I misspelled it. Sorry. systemsettings.

I also had another problem....mythtv couldn't see my tuner card. So I decided to load kde from synaptic. Now my tuner card can be seen by mythtv. Also the sound on the desktop is working.
