810 beta2, s-video or component chosen in AVwizard --> crash

Hi,

I have a shuttle SK22G2v2 with a GeForce 7300 GT, outputting to a non-HD TV over s-video. Until recently this was running 710, where everything worked (and thanks for that!) Now it has a clean install of 810 beta 2 from DVD.

I have the strange problem that selecting any S-video (or component, which I don't actually have but tried just to test) type in the AVwizard causes LMCE to crash. Specifically, I get a black screen, then the scroll lock and caps lock LEDs start flashing together, and I have to do a hard reboot. However : I can see it on my TV by pressing 5 before making this selection, so clearly it is capable of outputting over S-Video somehow.

If it matters, I'm in the UK hence have been trying to select PAL-I but other kinds like PAL-B do the same thing.

If I select VGA instead I can complete the installation using a monitor and everything is fine, except that no matter how many times I re-run the AVwizard the same thing happens and I can't get it to use my TV. I have tried reinstalling a few times with the same result.

Any ideas? It seems to me that if I could see what settings it was using after pressing "5", I could hardcode it in xorg.conf, but perhaps it's more complicated than that.

I have the same result with component output.
It worked with alpha 2.28 but crached now with a fresh beta2 (DVD like network install).

I have not find where is the problem. I've test a previous alpha saved xorg.conf but the MD crached to.
It is like the problem is not the xorg.conf file.

OK, some progress : at the point where I have pressed "5" to get the display showing over S-video I did :

Reboot and I gets the orbiter on the (widescreen) TV, but unsurprisingly with the wrong dimensions. At this point I'm wishing I'd backed up my old xorg.conf ...

I tried to manually bodge it by changing the "TVstandard" to "PAL-I" and the modelines to the "720x576" ones I found here : http://www.kingcot.eclipse.co.uk/unichrome/xorg.conf.txt

This probably wasn't right, is widescreen PAL 1024 x 576? Either way it resulted in a CRASH of the same sort again (blinking LEDs.) I don't know whether it was selecting PAL or the resolution change that did it though.

Conclusion : at least in my case this seems to be caused by the nvidia driver choking on something in the xorg.conf.

OK, I fixed it sort of : don't ask me why, but the problem is with choosing PAL. Option   "TVStandard"   "PAL-I", or any other variant of PAL that I tried (and only this change), makes it crash every time.

If I leave it on NTSC-M then my TV (Sony Trinitron) copes with it anyway. I've played the start of a few films and they look fine.

Choosing NTSC-M did the trick for me. Video is displaying fine and screen size is perfect.

As long as you don't need to set special settings in the xorg.conf for a legacy TV (connected via s-video, composite, etc.), this driver is quite fine.

But if you set the option TVStandard, X freezes the whole system while starting. I had a long fight against my HTPC after upgrading to 195.30 until I found out the reason for the crashes. This is of no interest for people who connect the TV via digital interfaces (or better: who are not using the tv-out of the graphics card) or who have a TV which works with the default standard set by the driver (which might be NTSC, but I'm not sure).

I had the choice between a) having the new driver with no TVStandard set and the picture being black and white or b) using the old driver and having color TV again. My choice was b)

As far as I know now, this error applies to all drivers since 190. Nvidia knows about it but doesn't fix it. Therefore I'm stuck with drivers up to version 185. Now I'm running 185.18 again and everything is fine.

(On my main PC the 195 runs without problems but I also don't see any improvements compared to 190)
