Media browser and title attribute problem

Ok i'm still struggling with episodes running rampant in the media browser. I don't want to use filename/folder structure Here's my current situation (small example)

I have two directories American Dad Season 1, Family Guy Season 1. They have cover art and attributes. The main one is title. I use the 'Apply these tags recursively' feature I check 'Enable TV Episode Tagging Mode' to make this easier i've named all my files 0101 - American Dad.avi for example so I can use the default settings.

Now all season 1 American Dad and Family Guy avi have the same (respescitvely) title, cover art, and corresponding episode number. Then in the directory that contains them I 'Edit attributes for all files in directory' and set the genre attribute to 'TV Show' (If I set genre attribute for the directory it shows up in the filter results of the media browser later, and when clicked it's empty)

Ok so here's the problem when I got to 'Video' on the orbiter everything is there, I thought if videos had the same title they would be collapsed into one entry (expanding to episodes once clicked). Is this something that's coming in the future? I've read mention of it in several posts, but not sure on status and this is how ideally I would want it to work. Is it already implemented (I run alpha 2.26) and I'm doing something wrong?

Ok, so they're all listed, let's use some filters. I set the filter to 'genre' then i pick 'TV Show' now my media shows up like this:
0101 American Dad.avi
0101 Family Guy.avi
0102 American Dad.avi
0102 Family Guy.avi

And of course all the American Dad cover art is on the left, all the Family Guy on the right. It may not be a big deal with just 2 series, but I have a lot more than that. I thought I was tagging my media correctly, and taking advantage of the recursive feature for TV episodes, but the results are all wrong. I could live with genre 'TV Show' if it were at least displayed correctly, not interwoven.

tag each episode with a title of Family Guy, or American Dad.

Use the Episode attribute to tag each episode with a # and a name. The media plugin will use and show this, and eventually, will collapse these to be expanded when clicked on.

This is set when i use 'Apply these tags recursively' and 'Enable TV Episode Tagging Mode' All the episodes have the same title and the correct episode number and the same genre 'TV Show' that doesn't keep the filter view from showing:

0101 American Dad.avi
0101 Family Guy.avi
0102 American Dad.avi
0102 Family Guy.avi

Technically it's sorting the file names correctly, but they're only named this way to make using 'Apply these tags recursively' feature easier. Shouldn't the view after selecting 'Genre -> TV Show' show the title attribute first?

that feature does not tag episodes properly. Please do not use it.

I still need to slap the guy who wrote it silly.

You need to tag each file, with the same title as the main title of the show
and create an episode tag for each file which has at least the title of the episode.

What a stup... errmmm... odd way to name your files, had you gone with: "American Dad 0101.avi" etc. this would not have been an issue at all.

I agree it's a stupid way to setup the file names the only reason I set them up that way was because that was the default for the feature 'Apply These Tags Recursively'

The TV Episode Tagging Mode will auto-tag media files based on the filenames. You can fine tune the filename format with the fields below.
It currently sets the 'Program' attribute to be the Season Number. Future LMCE Development may change this, but this is the solution for now.

4 digit number for season/episode (2 digits each) followed by a space, then hyphen, then space, then the title. With no trailing text.
Example: 0109 - The Title of My Episode.avi"

Now that I know that feature doesn't work as intended I'll have to rename my files and tag manually.

What i find interesting is when the media browser is set to title, the list of videos on the right shows Title - Episode (but it shows everything - need filters). If i change the filter to 'Genre' and choose my 'TV Show' genre, the list on the right is the filename (eg: 0102 Family Guy.avi) , not title - episode (Family Guy - S01E02) as  I would expect (since I set those attributes). Why the default to filename? Am I missing something?

Isn't there a wiki guide for tagging conventions that explains this? If not, should we have one?

I know it's not ideal, we need to come up with a better way to tag this stuff.

i've done the necessary work in the media plugin. basically we just need to use the title and episode attributes, and things will get better as changes to the media plugin are made over time to display the data.

Hi Thom,
i did this with my series of Friends (ripped the complete disk at once to .dvd) but the "collapse" part did not happen in any Orbiter.
am i doing something wrong or will this feature be made available in the future?

if it will be available in the future, what is, for now, the best way to store, rip and browse tv-shows?

You need to tag each file, with the same title as the main title of the show

I have submitted a patch to Trac which causes the TV episode tagging mode to behave as recommended above.

The feature is now very usable with the patch applied.  I can't wait for the collapsing feature, based on a common title.

I would even be willing to implement this myself.  Thom: are you working on it actively?  I wouldn't want to step on your toes.

Also, should we do a two-level hierarchy, based on common Title, then common Program (for season number)?  When you have 26 seasons of a given TV show, a flat episode list is difficult to wade through.
