Hi,

My 2c worth experience.

All my DVD's played fine, but then they got the same error. Original DVD's but after trying everything, even reinstalled my core on a seperate harddrive, still no luck. In desperation swapped my DVD drive from the wife's pc with my core. And Viola, the DVD's are working. Even on my original install.

So what I've experienced is that a Faulty DVD drive or even a small scratch on the DVD can cause it.
You'll find that a DVD with a small scratch will play in a normal DVD player but not on your core.

Hope this helps

Karel

I've had a strange experience with this recently, I have loads of kids dvds ripped onto my core, mostly BBC or disney ones.  Anyway, some wouldn't play from the start, stating the dvdcss not installed message, but others would.  Then around the beginning of this year, they all started working....Great...... Until last week, when some stopped playing again, stating the same dvdcss library not installed.  Now they were ripped all at the same time, all to the core, and have been there unmolested ever since.  I've tried apt-get install libdvdcss2 but it says the latest version is already installed.

Has anything else changed in a recent update that would effect this??

Ok i will try and report back but i have 2 questions:
1- must i install this on the core AND any MD (through moonXX)?
2- do i risk breaking my system following the steps in my link?

thanks,
br,
Raymond

You need to install it on any machine where you wish to playback DVD's or rips of DVD's. In fact there are still relatively few DVD's that will not be playable with libdvdcss. We always recommend that you use regionset on your DVD drive and set it to a specific region before using it for encrypted DVD playback. If this is not done then this can increase the likelihood of a libdvdcss failure message.

All the best
