All of a sudden, w32codecs will not install. I'll have to install it manually.

root@moon61:~# apt-get install w32codecs

That failed, so I tried on the console. Neither worked. I did get it installed manually, I just thought it might need to be adressed.

something specific to your system, this isn't a general issue....

Are you sure Collin?  I just did a re-install and have the same problem:

I tried using add software and then with console and this was the result:

Quotelinuxmce@dcerouter:~$ sudo apt-get install w32codecs

I figured I would wait for someone else to complain, rather than argue the point ;-)

You'll have to follow the instructions in the link above to get it installed.

"general issue" means "everyone suffers from it"! This is demonstrably not the case. A couple of people so far out of hundreds or even thousands. Yes there could be a bug somewhere that combined with your specific circumstances causes this to happen, which still isn't a general issue. Conceivably their could now be a version issue with the codecs due to a recent update - but 1) I thought the codecs were actually downloaded from a local deb cache (could easily be wrong here) and 2) every new install should now have this issue - we should keep our ears/eyes open for this possibility...

My core HDD blew out yesterday so I had to reinstall and I am having the same issue, TSHCAK was going to check on it if he ever has a free second. I believe that this is a general issue at this point, I have seen a few people report the same problem on IRC.

Agreed - I assume that there must be a version issue with some recent update of the codecs. I thought that they came from a local cache but I guess they must actually be downloaded.. perhaps the usual legal issues?

Just reporting:

I've encountered this issue numerous times...
Also today, yesterday and friday...
I just ignored it and did not install w32codecs...

At the moment I'm having a hard time getting myth going...
Everything seems set properly, I have program listing, but myth will simply refuse to show tv...
I've tried recording through http://dcerouter/mythweb, and everything is accepted, next, when I check /home/public/data/videos/tv_shows_1/ I see the recordings listed but the files sit at 1120k size???

Checking in the logs, I read this:
2009-03-08 14:26:19.045 adding: dcerouter as a client (events: 0)
2009-03-08 14:26:19.048 TVRec(2): Changing from None to WatchingLiveTV
2009-03-08 14:26:19.052 TVRec(2): HW Tuner: 2->2
2009-03-08 14:26:19.296 Unknown video codec
2009-03-08 14:26:19.300 Please go into the TV Settings, Recording Profiles and
2009-03-08 14:26:19.301 setup the four 'Software Encoders' profiles.
2009-03-08 14:26:19.303 Assuming RTjpeg for now.
2009-03-08 14:26:19.304 NVR: Error, unknown audio codec
2009-03-08 14:26:19.325 NVR: Won't work with the streaming interface, falling back
VIDIOCGMBUF:: Invalid argument
2009-03-08 14:26:59.336 TVRec(2): Changing from WatchingLiveTV to None
2009-03-08 14:26:59.361 Finished recording Sporza: Parijs - Nice: channel 204250
2009-03-08 14:28:10.481 Expiring Sporza: Parijs - Nice from Sun Mar 8 14:15:00 2009, 0 MBytes, forced expire (LiveTV recording)

So I'm forcing install of w32codecs now to see if this has anything to do with my myth problem.

Believe me, the error message explained it. It was and is a general issue for whoever actually would try to install the w32codecs, which I guarantee wasn't 1000s of people, lol. The package either wasn't in the repository or the server was down. I was just trying to help.

Oh, and "general issue" means it can generally affect anyone, not everyone.
