Intel media motherboard DG45ID - will this work?
« on: February 21, 2009, 04:18:05 pm »
Hi.
I am preparing to buy hardware for LinuxMCE. I am looking for something with everything on board to save some money.

I am wondering if Intel media motherboard http://www.intel.com/products/desktop/motherboards/DG45ID/DG45ID-overview.htm will work with LinuxMCE?
This motherboard has got everything inbuilt (HDMI, 8ch audio).

Thanks

The X4500HD GPU used in the DG45ID is new and we have not tested it yet... so this might cause you problems. Also the NIC chip used, the Intel 82567LF, could cause some problems too. None of these problems are insurmountable but they will make your experience less than smooth.

All the best

Hi Andrew.

I have got this motherboard and I have Debian Lenny installed. NIC and Video works fine. On the basis of this I thought that Ubuntu should be OK with it.

Anyway, is there any chance that you can test the motherboard. I think that this would be great choice for LinuxMCE for the future.

Hi,

If you have the motherboard then just go ahead and test it with LinuxMCE-0710 ;-)....if it works/fails you'll know inside 45 mins with the DVD installer.

Then you can report back on your experience here and add that info to a new wiki page for this motherboard - this is a community project and everyones contribution is valuable.

....now Lenny was released on the 14th Feb and is a very much newer distribution, with a much later Kernel, and literally thousands of other improvements and changes that are not in the LinuxMCE-0710 release. So Lenny is not a good measure (at all!) of how 'smooth' your ride will be under LinuxMCE.

LinuxMCE-0810 is in Alpha right now and unless you are prepared to put up with 'alpha' like issues I would suggest you wait to test this version until it reaches at least Beta stage. However LinuxMCE-0810 is more likely to support the DG45ID 'out of the box' as it is based on a much later Kernel etc etc.

All the best
