im trying to get to root in my console using 'su'. It asks for a password which I dont remember setting one and any that it might be it comes up and says authentication failed. How do I check what it is or reset this password?

I should be more specific, its the dcerouter login and password that I'm not understanding. I don't recall ever setting either, is there a default?

How do you install cd or dvd
I only use dvd one of the first promps on installation was the root password
If you do not remenber that you should google how to reset root.
How do you connect to the console by ssh or direct to the kubuntu desktop
The default username for root is linuxmce and the password you use in installation
Good luck

Um, no.  At least on my install (710 DVD x86) linuxmce is not root.  Root does not have a password, hence you cannot login or su to root.  Following the ubuntu guidelines, you should perform root tasks using sudo.

If you don't want to do it this way, login and give root a password - 'sudo passwd root'  Just remember this is not the intended method.

edit:  I may have been confused, are you trying to login as root or just login?  If just login, use the linuxmce as login.

I tried the method that the wiki suggested, which was using the first family members name as both the login and password, this did not work regardless of caps.

I'm at work atm so I will try using the other method when I get home.

My reasoning for doing this is that I am trying to install the NVIDIA drivers for my card, but it asks me to shutdown the x console(?) Which I read required you to press ctrl+alt+bckspce to enter into the console with the x console turned off.

When I do ctrl+alt+bckspce, it asks for my login and pass.

Btw, thanks for everyones help, I am completely noob at this and its been a loooooooong time since I've messed around with linux so I appreciate the help.
