Setting up Outside Access to my Web orbiter.... Can't seem to get it working

I decided that I want to access a web orbiter from my work. I went through the directions on the wiki and I cannot seem to get it working. I am wondering if someone might be able to give me some pointers.

I set the security setting in the admin page to Allow outside access to the website.
Then I went to the network settings and made sure to put in my user name and password as well as my URL from dyndns.org.

When I try to access my admin page from within my home using the URL it works but when I try from any other source outside my home network it times out.

Are there any firewall rules I need to set for LMCE and if so how?

I am not using any kind of router before my cable modem. Internet connection comes straight from the COX cable modem directly to my Core.

It should work without setting of Allow outside access. Your core should be accessible from outside. To do that you should configure your router - open port 80 or make port forwarding. The admin and web orbiter should be accessible from outside in that case.

How do you have your system configured?

I go from the telephone wall jack to a DSL Modem, from the DSL Modem to a Router, from the Router to NIC1 on my Core.

For me to configure external access to the web orbiter, I had to add a port forwarder rule inside my Router (which is quite easy actually).

Most likely you need to do the same.

I have a cable modem. Cable company sends feed to modem I connect from the cable modem to my NIC in my core.  I have no router between them. Then from my Core's Second NIC I connect to my Gigabit switch which then connects to all my MD's and other computers.

I am set up very much in this way. I have Satellite internet modem connected to my core, and then everything else is connected to the second NIC. All I did was enable Outside Access, and then set up DynDns to update my dyndns domain address, so I connect to it using:

And I can get there just fine. I like to mess with the wife by turning lights on and off

But I did nothing else special other than that.

When I had the modem to the linksys router, and then to the core. I just opened up a DMZ port to the core's ip address, and got the same thing.

Ok, well, that helps some.

Your cable box is your connection to the internet and it likely provides your Core with an outside IP address via DHCP. In the pluto-admin area you can likely discover what your outside IP address is. Check Advanced > Network > Network Settings. Top of the screen.

It is very possible that your cable internet provider is blocking port 80 (and other ports) to prevent you from running servers. What you need to do is figure out what ports are available. If 80 is blocked you could always use 8080 instead perhaps?

You should also check Advanced > Network > Firewall Rules.

You need to open up port 80 in here. You might be able to do this easier under Wizard > Security > Outside Access.

    Allow outside access to the website on port 80     
   Allow outside access to the website on port [ ? ]

You can try a scan at Shields Up! to see if any ports on your system are currently open...

Basically you have two things to look at..

1) Does your cable internet block common port numbers?

2) Are those common port numbers (80 in the case of your web orbiter requirements) open on your core

 Hmmm. Have you logged into dyndns.org to ensure the IP number for your domain is correct?

 I didn't have any success using the built-in dyndns update function in the pluto web admin. I eventually gave up on it and just programmed the dyndns stuff in my linksys router and that is working out fine.

 I guess that would be one other item to ensure is set up correctly for access from the outside via your dyndns domain.

Well my ip address does not change much, but when it does, LMCE updates it. I can always get there, and I know my IP has changed at least twice since I enabled it.

And Yes Thom, I like a full menu. The living room is the only one like this, the other rooms are pretty well stock.

I think that you are most likely right. Cox is kinda a bitch like that. When I get home I will run the scan to see if I have any available ports.
So to pose another question. If I need to set up another port such as 8080, do I need to do anything my URL?

Yes, you'd adjust your url as you've indicated, adding the :8080 to the end....

Just wanted to say thanks again to freymann and seth. I was able to get my web orbiter running after I set up another port.

One more quick question....
Is there a way to manage my files from outside my home?
For example, I have some media files that I want to upload.. maybe some pics or movie... or maybe I want to download some some of my mp3's from my core, is it possible to log in to some kind of file manager?
I was wondering if there is something already built in to LMCE for this.
