mythtv vs VDR under LMCE ?

Hi,

with release of working VDR setup (other forum thread) it seems that VDR is getting more and more attention under LMCE. Since I'm long time user of mythtv and don't know anything about VDR, would kindly ask if you can point me to some more info or maybe give some brief comparison Mythtv vs VDR - particularly under LMCE.

Is VDR likely to be more integrated (look & fell) like mythtv ? In my case I use iptv mpeg2 streams from my triple play provider and it seems that this is supported under mythtv (will be in 0.21) and currently also under VDR (with iptv plugin).... This functionality also brings some interesting features (you can for example use vlc to transcode whatever stream it can receive (for instance webcam, mp3 audio streams, other video streams, etc...) to "iptv" stream that will be shown on TV as normal channel like any other...

Can someone please give us more insight into VDR under LMCE ? Does it look better integrated as mythtv ?

Is it still impossible to try VDR on "mythtv LMCE" installation ?

Bulek - it already looks far more integrated than Myth, and the understanding is that this will only get better. But there are still instances of the "two interfaces" look where somethings happen in the LMCE Orbiter interface and others in the VDR OSD. It is designed specifically for DVB so you get EPG OTA instead of having to scrape some XML service...


To trial it on a Myth installation, I believe that you just have to untick the Myth option and tick the VDR option in the software modules section and wait for it to finish the device installation, then configure VDR for channels in the usual way. I have never done it, but I believe others have...

The recent upsurge in VDR work is because totallymaxed and the guys at CHT required it. Burgiman busted his butt to finish the VDR integration, and only recently has his work become available to the source tree.

There is no shift away from MythTV as such, if for no other reason than the US market requires MythTV, we have no DVB, and thus no way to use VDR.

With that said, Daniel has been hard at work patching MythTV to bring it up to at least 0.21+patches... he also tests MythTV trunk on a regular basis to see if it is a viable candidate for integration as well...

Meanwhile, I am hard at work doing the research work needed to provide a majority of MythTV's UI on Orbiter itself instead of displaying on MythTV's UI. I could definitely use some help here, especially in the area of abstracting MythTV's data logic so that data grids can be built more effectively.

...And I should add that Burgiman is part of the CHT team and operationally looks after much of our German Centersonic product. Burgiman is also a long time vdr developer and is well known in the vdr community.

I agree with Thom... there in no shift 'away' from MythTV at all. For the US and other non-DVB regions it is the only and best option for TV integration. For Europe/Australia and other regions where DVB is the standard then here at CHT/Centersonic we think vdr is the best choice. But both Myth and vdr have much too offer and it is really down to individual community members to decide which is better suited to their needs.
