How would you recommend i control my tv? samsung ps-42c96hd. What hardware do i neeD?

if it only has IR capabilities, get a USB UIRT, and a Xantech 286 double emitter to affix to the TV and connect to the UIRT. A device template can then be made by learning your TV's remote.
