changing soundcard - HOWTO rediscover or autoinstall?

Hi folks,

I'd like to switch my Audigy soundcard with a Hercules Fortissimo II. (optical SPdif)
LMCE doesn't seem to do the switch automagically.

Do you have any suggestions as to what I can / have to do to get this right again?

Just to signal that after a couple of reboots the card got recognized.
SPDIF optical output is functional.

Sound is quirkey though...
When I pop in a DVD sound is allright but intermittently halts...
It is unbearable to watch a DVD this way..
Also when changing for example in Amarok to another song, there is a hissing scratchy sound (short)

Any ideas or suggestions?

Did you rerun the AV wizard and select the right outputs? You may need to manually tweak the /etc/asound,conf file. Caution, that can be a little like descending into the rabbit hole where nothing is as it seems.

Okay, I got myself into some mess...
In an attempt to correct the soundcard problem, I issued

sudo apt-get --purge remove linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils
Then I reinstalled the forementioned.
After a reboot, my core/hybrid orbiter won't start:

Not starting device 20 OnScreen Orbiter - binary is not found, probably it is in the middle of installation
But even after a couple of minutes, nothing happens...

Any smart advice to set right my error?

I did that once myself. I'm sorry to say that my solution would be to pull out the install DVD and start over. Fixing some things are so much more work than they are worth. I must have wasted 4-6  hours trying to fix it. A reinstall is about an hour. Adding your customizations is another, usually.

For who it my be convenient:

I had it fixed reasonably easy;
I checked /var/log/dpkg.log and had a look at what apt-get hat done for me.
Amongst others I saw it'd deintsalled ubuntu-minimal and pluto-orbiter.
Did a reinstall of these 2 and was up and running again :-)

But - unfortunately - my Hercules Fortissimo still doesn't sound good :-(

As I've already had my share with the install (for one DVD-install will absolutely not work on this box)
I am reluctant to do a new install, I already have a couple of MD's around etc.
Also I really don't like LMCE to run my DHCP stuff and such as this goes down when I need to work on the machine...

I'd like to check orionsune about letting my other DHCP server do the job, but don't know exactly what it entails to switch from 2 nic's to 1 nic.

if you have MD's you have the DHCP constraint. Since the MD's boot off of the core they need to be able to know where to boot. The DHCP server manages this. And that leads to using the internal DHCP server.

I'm using one NIC, the core as a DHCP server and an external router with its DHCP off as a firewall. I use the default configuration- fixed IP for the external pointing at the router, the internal set to 192.168.80.1 and the DHCP server running. There are other configurations but they all can be problems to set up.

If you are removing one NIC you can reconfigure the system in devices (at the bottom of the right menu), core, network interfaces. Changing it in other places may get over written when you least expect it.
