I have now wasted over 7GB of my IPS's download allowance downloading 704 from piratebay.

The DVD failed on decompression yet passed the md5sum

The CD1 failed on boot and also passed the md5sum.

I got Error 15 on boot from CD1.

WHAT IS GOING ON?

With downloads from ubuntu site I have had ZERO problems!!!!!!!!

what are you booting from cd 1? what is being decompressed on the dvd? did you download an archived file of the dvd?

OK I think I jumped to the wrong conclusion with the CD's in that I thought cd1 was kubuntu 704.

Now d/l kububtu 704, thankfully at 700KB/s, and will try again with the cd's.

As for the DVD. I have no idea what is being decompressed. I got as far as telling it which drive to use to install and then it started to decompress something to it and then failed.

hmm....that is strange that the dvd failed so early after passing the md5. no problems with that dvd drive ever, right? hopefully you have better luck with the cds.

I would say I am 75% sure the DVD drive is ok, but certainly worth checking out a I have a spare lying around.

Anywho that aside I am having serious problems with kubuntu.

Never really used this version before as I have always used Ubuntu (gnome)

Well to get back on my train of thought...

I booted up into Kubuntu from the live disc and did an installation on my spare 40Gb HDD, overwriting my Ubuntu install for that same machine.

Started to install Linux MCE wheer it then said I needed to update to the restricted drivers for my nvidia card (Geforce 2). After doing this I had to reboot and that was when things went bad...

on reboot all I got after the kubuntu splash was a cursor flashing in the top left corner of the screen.

I tried a reinstall, but that failed mid-way.

To eliminate the HDD I switched to a newer drive and the exact same thing happened.

Not 100% sure of the spec, as I aint home just now, but I think its a pentium 4 3Ghz  1Gb ram and a geforce 2 card.

Puzzled as to why Kubuntu would have issues installing on a system I had Ubuntu 704 installed on with no probs.

hmm....i know theres a thing about the input after you install the proprietary drivers for nvidia. you should have only had to hit the numbers 1-5 or changed to dvi if using vga or vga if using dvi.

that link explains it better. go to where it says the AV wizard doesnt start.
