VIA Eden Mainboard compatability
« on: September 07, 2007, 08:11:59 pm »
Hi,

Just viewed a YouTube on LinuxMCE,  :o wow! I'm very keen to start going with the software, and this is the hardware I want to purchase (with reason):

- VIA C7 2.0Ghz
- VIA CN700 Chipset with Unichrome Pro Screencard
- 1GB DDR2 400 SDRAMB
- 1 PCI slot
- VIA 1617A 6 channel Audio
- IEEE 1394, 8 USB 2.0 ports
- TV Out
- etc.

Is this hardware strong enough to drive the solution?

Any info is appreciated.

Thanks,
Reinhard

I guess it comes down to what you are looking for your lmce system to deliver. The architecture of an lmce system is build around a central Core which is the server for the system but can also have a screen/UI and  be used as a client simultaneously. Connected to your Core can be any number of Media Directors that are client machines (although they can have a local boot drive most people config their MD's to network or pxe boot from the Core).

Generally in most lmce systems the Core is a reasonably powerful AMD or Pentium processor, RAM and HD storage. The MD's can be less highly specc'd but as they are often delivering local media playback so are usually equipped with giid graphics cards and audio outputs. These MD's machines are often based on Via chipsets like those mentioned in your post.

It certainly would be possible to build a Core/Server machine around the Via motherboard you describe but depending on your type of usage you might find it lacks some performance if to support Media Playback in multiple MD or client machines.

Its worth a try though if you already have the hardware.

Hope this helps

Thanks, once I have the hardware will post the results.
