Installation confusion
« on: August 27, 2007, 08:46:38 pm »
Hello All,

My 1st post  :D

Anyway.  I installed Kubuntu 7.04 (fresh install)  I saw a small window on my TV through DVI.  Everything visible.

Then I started to install the LinuxMCE 1.0 and verified disc 1 and disc 2 and Kubuntu live disc.  Then screen goes black.  (http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Installation_Guide)  Don't remember seeing the Linux installation package.

Then on my tv I get resolution invalid (message from TV not computer).  Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I maybe can connect a real monitor to see what's going on but I would think LinuxMCE will install using tv compatible screen resolutions (if that even the case).  I was able to see and use Kubuntu on the tv without having to change to resolution.

My system specs:

ATI AIW 9700 PRo
2.4G Intel Hyperthread
Tv with DVI

I used the component out of the 9700 to connect with 1080 HD res but was using the DVI when using and installing Kubuntu.

I will try this when I get a chance:  http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/AVWizard

Maybe that will help.  I will post back when I get a chance.  I still don't remember me getting a restart after LinuxMCE installation.  I don't even remember this:  http://wiki.linuxmce.org/images/thumb/0/02/Snapshot14.JPG/400px-Snapshot14.JPG

Bangin' away,

i believe there is a lot of difficulty with ATI drivers working. that could be the problem; but i really have no experience with it so i cant be too sure. ive just seen it here and there in the forums and on the wiki.

Thanks!!!   :)  That points me in a right direction.  Found this: http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Display_Drivers#ATI_Chipsets

Will look into installing the drivers after fresh install of Kubuntu.  Then I will install LinuxMCE to see if that helps.  If not I'll try again with line hacks:  http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/AtiProprietaryDriver

I'll give this a try when I get a chance.  Currently, I use the computer for BTV Link.  So, when the wifey not watching recorded shows, then I'm able to work on this.  May not get a chance until the weekend.  If anyone has other information or suggestions, please post.  I'm trying to get through the learning curve.

Don't know if this helps at all but.. when I initially booted one of my MDs which was plugged into a widescreen LCD monitor via DVI cable it went through everything until it got to running the AV wizard. The screen then went black (and turned itself off as it was getting no signal) I plugged another monitor into the VGA port and there was the AV wizard running. I switched it to DVI (which is the first screen) and it changed back to the other monitor and was fine from then on.

I guess the same could be happening to you, where the TV-OUT is the same as the DVI - So my suggestion would be to try what you proposed and plug in a monitor (via VGA) for the first step of the wizard.
