networking issues
« on: August 10, 2007, 01:36:18 am »
sorry in advance.  i know many people have posted problems with their networking setup but so far, i don't seem to have come across any that are in the same position i am.  i am trying to set up a basic htpc which will be on my wireless network.  originally, i would have liked to use linuxmce as a dhcp server so i could set up other network linuxmce boxes.  however, my htpc is currently connected to the internet via a wireless network card and cannot be directly attached to my router or dsl modem.  is it possible to get linuxmce's dhcp working with only one wireless nic?  if not, how would i go about disabling all of linuxmce's networking settings and just connect to the internet via my wireless nic? as a side note, the network settings page in the admin panel does not seem to detect my wireless network card-only the ethernet built into my motherboard.  not sure if this causes more complications.  thanks in advance!

If i understand correctly....you want to hand out DHCP addresses out over the wireless? That should be fine. You don't have to have it connected directly to anything. It will still accept requests for addresses and give them out to that subnet. You would have to have the wireless NIC set up to use the internal network and all devices would be on your regular internal network since you have only one NIC. Did that answer it or at least help?

well when you set it up just set the ip address to be the same subnet as your regular network. youll need your gateway, subnet mask, whatever dns servers you use and a free ip address for that nic. if you use 192.168.1.1 as your gateway then youd need 192.168.1.X for your linuxmce box. do you know the gateway and dns info on the rest of the network?

well one of the main issues is that i dont think linuxmce is detecting my wireless nic.  it wants to use my built in ethernet on my motherboard which i dont use.

I have a dlink dwl-g122 revision C and it works with the rt73 driver from:
http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com/wiki/index.php/Downloads

I'm not sure if it working with the revision B take a look at the serialmonkey form.

Follow site should be also interesting for wifi drivers:
