I am having the same issues.  looking at the properties of the file it doesnt say that it is executable.  I cant change the permissions on the file because I am not the owner of the file.

Ok, well i messed up.  I installed the ubuntu, as per the instructions, I didnt realize that it needed kubuntu.  I am downloading the ISO for Kubuntu now, I will keep you updated.

I downloaded the installer package, after I installed, the install linux mce icon still wouldnt work, even tried a reboot and still nothing.  I ran it from the command line and it said that it needed gksu installed.  I installed that, and still get nothing when I click the Icon from the command line  this is the message that I get.

test@test-desktop:~$ gksu /usr/share/mce-installer/mce-installer.sh

Thanks for the link.  I did the stuff recommended in that thread, and still get nothing, I click on the install icon, it asks for the password but then i get nothing.  I used Kate to edit the file instead of VI, and actually forgot what permissions the file had before so I gave everyone RWX on it, would that cause any problems?

Also I reinstalled the package file from the site after I edited the xorg.conf file.  and when I run it from the command line I still get nothing.

The best I can say is "Works for me".

I followed the instructions exactly and didn't have to modify permissions on the script or anything.  Just clicked the icon, waited an extraordinary amount of time and eventually it started.
