As long as you aren't looking for a hybrid, your selection is only limited by driver supported of the NICs, which can be rectified by plugin NICs. So any half-way decent hardware build is fine. I personally like HP ProLiants at my clients installs. Even the ML series is usable, even though I personally do prefer my DL

In the US, slickdeals has been had numerous listings for lenovo servers rather inexpensive.  With and without drives.

So true. So many decent hardwares are on sale around this time in US.

Can we have a sub category for hardware on forum?

The thing with hardware is: It changes so rapidly, that there is no real value in setting up a sub category. And as I tried to point in my first message, most hardware will work as a core. The only thing that could hinder it would be the network interface, and that can be amended by using PCI(e) NICs. For MDs it is a different story, but the first sentence still applies.

The one thing that would be useful is a wiki page that simply lists the hardware and whether a 12.04LTS desktop LiveCD will boot to the desktop. Simple and sweet.

My core uses a SSD atm, after the HDD died.

My core is virtualized (Debian KVM host).  The block device used as the OS drive is a LVM based logical volume presented from the host, and that volume group is sitting on an SSD (along with the OS volumes for some other virtual machines).

Performance is good, even with other VM's hitting the SSD.  SSD's excel at random I/O

We've shipped Dianemo 12.04 systems with SSD boot drives for over 2 years now and have seen no reduced reliability or any issues specific to the use of SSD's. Our SSD based systems typically use NAS's with tradiyional spinning drives for bulk media storage.
