Help needed with choosing tv card
« on: June 15, 2010, 03:37:04 am »
Hi,

I am planning on giving a try linuxmce without much experience with linux, just basic navigation in cli and ability to follow instructions. It took me 2 days to install 810 beta2 but after reading posts on forum i succeeded.

My main priorities are tv functionality but also i am very keen on home automation and touch screen orbiters.

Currently i am running media portal server and a few clients, so some hardware is going to be reused, probably all :)
I have an STB which is currently controlled via microsoft ir blaster, i am aware that it will not work in linuxmce and needs to be replaced with usb uirt or more expensive but better option gc100.
I have an old nvidia analog nvtv card which is not compatible with linuxmce so i am puzzled on which tv card to choose.
What i am looking from tv card:
1) I need dual analog card, one going to stb and another going to socket on the wall from tv provider (analog).
2) It has to have hardware encoding imbuilt as i am planning to use my p4 2.8 prescott with 1 GB ram and nvidia fx5200 as core and possibly add more tv cards
3) I live in ireland so pal is needed
4) Pci slot as my mb doesn't have pci express

I looked at hauppauge hvr1300 which has hardware encoding on board but after doing research (google/linuxmce forums) it looks that it has problems with analog reception and sound even in mythtv 0.23 and channel change. It does have one analog and 1 dvb-t tuner, so one analog will be used for stb and i was hoping to use dvb-t for analog tv but not sure if it is possible.

I would love to get hauppauge pvr500 but can't find anywhere in ireland or uk.

I would appreciate if anyone could suggest me a card which is stable in linuxmce with mythtv and if it possible to use dvb-t tuner for analog reception.

Thanks in advance,

Oleg

I looked at them and that is why i was hoping to go for hvr1300 but after reading numerous posts about analog part instability  i am asking for users who have analog cards which are stable in linuxmce/mythv except hauppauge pvr x50 series.

Oleg

We are now using the latest version of mythtv .23 so it shouldnt be an issue

Thanks
