Asus M3N78-VM Audio via HDMI use to work

I just did a fresh install of the system. My MD's are M3N78-VM and I use to be able to get video and audio via HDMI. Now for whatever reason, it stopped working.

My config is the same as before when it use to work. Here is the parameters:

Alsa: 1.0.23
nvidia: 195 (installs by default)

New install, things I had to change:
For some reason xorg.conf showed "device" as "vesa" and not "nvidia" This fixed my inability to pick U2 (fixed)

I use to just setup the MD and download/compile/install the new alsa via script, go into alsamixer and unmute everything and reboot. Viola, audio over HDMI worked. Now it is not working.

Any idea's anyone? Everything I use to have to change looks right.

Thanks,

Tony

Have you checked alsamixer for a muted input IEC958 1 should be the one.

I ran alsamixer and get the following:

Card: HDA NVidia
Chip: Nvidia MCP77/78 HDMI
blah blah

Something I noticed that is a bit off. Where it use to say IEC958, now it shows it as "S/PDIF, S/PDIF D, and S/PDIF 1" It's never shown that before. It always showed the IEC958, etc...

hmm never seen the names before but it would be spdif 1 i would assume.

I find the same thing. It started happening a few days ago when I did an apt-get update. Will try to retrace my steps and get it working.

I have the same motherboard and although I've been having some other issues with hd playback the hdmi sound seems to be working.  I recently did the apt-get update for the new xine, but everything still works as expected (with hdmi sound output); I can't seem to turn up or down the volume and like I said some wierd hd playback issues.  but I do get sound output.

I spent a while looking at it but did not get anywhere. Suddenly, one day last week it worked after a reboot, but then since the last reboot it has not worked. So still no wiser...

Is it something to do with your ALSA version guys? Is it worth trying to roll it back to a previous version, see if that does anything?
