An alternative that has a lot of potential is the JeeNode by JeeLabs at
http://news.jeelabs.org/docs/jn4.html. Very low priced but very capable for bunch of automation and data logging tasks.
I've already suggested to use this as a networked fire alarm, the other more conventional uses are for instance electricity/gas consumption logging, movement/light sensor etc. Requires 'just' a simple GSD implementation (which I just cannot do yet :-| ).
I'm not affiliated to the JeeLabs, I just have a number of their products waiting to be integrated into LinuxMCE. Hope to see more people getting interested in this!
