LinuxMCE Freezes after first main menu load
« on: July 09, 2008, 06:51:21 am »
I have just installed LinuxMCE via the 2 CD method on top of a brand new Kubuntu install. My first problem is that the Ethernet on the mobo doesn't work anymore but I use a Netgear WG311v3 and after much tooling around I got it to work. After the long install of MCE I went through the setup process followed by the configuration setup, everything was working fine, wifi card was still working, the video of the woman looked fine.

But after the final restart before MCE would start "officially" for the first time, it goes through the MCE launcher and pulls up the main menu, then after about 10 seconds the screen freezes and I get this ugly pic with multi-colored vertical lines.

Here is a video i took with my digital cam of the startup right after the Kubuntu blue loading screen.

Once that last screen comes up I have to do a hard reset

System specs:
Intel P4 2.8 GHz (single core)
1 GB DDR RAM
2 Internal HDD's 40 GB each (I stream my media via a Vista computer I have)
Netgear Wg311v3 PCI wireless card
Onboard intel video controller (64MB video memory)

I realize this setup is the bare minimum but it is a computer I put together from the spare parts of others that were given to me. I am not going for amazing graphics and speed I am just looking for functionality.

I know the GFx isn't good but I am just running to a 20" monitor via VGA connection, and it has worked fine for WindowsMCE 2005.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Hmmm... I'm surprised your system even gets that far to be frank! You dont say which motherboard chipset you have or what Intel graphics controller... but you will need more that 64mb of memory and at least a Intel GMA950 onboard.

So I would recommend either a new motherboard with better Intel or nVidia onboard graphics (6150, 7025, 7050) or buy a low-cost nVidia graphics card (6200TC/7300GT are reasonable choices) and add that to your existing motherboard (disable your onboard Intel graphics controller in BIOS if you go this route).

All the best

Hi,

I'm curious as to what your set your graphic display to.  I hope it was Static images, no overlay (lightweight).

Cheers.

If you watch the YouTube video GreenSauce is definitely running UI2 when the Orbiter locks... I agree if he tried UI1 then he would probably be ok.
