Installation Failed: Could not Cache Kubuntu CD
« on: June 26, 2008, 09:13:29 pm »
Alright ladies and gents, I've been really excited about installing Linux MCE for a while now and I've finally got the pieces to the computer, so I can start it. Now I met a few issues with just the simple install of Kubuntu which ended up taking me a whole day until I realized that my old Geforce card had died on me and was creating the issues. So finally after using both the Kubuntu Live and Alternate CD many times, I finally got the stuff installed.

I decided to move over the .iso's of all three cds from my NTFS Harddrive(which took a bit to get to work), but eventually got the things sitting on my Desktop. I opened the install, entered my password, answered the questions, and selected my isos for the install. But I ended up with quite a big problem.

The Console opened with an error and continued with failures until it closed with a, "Installation Failed" Could not cahce Kubuntu Live CD", I've tried the install many times with the same failure. I even tried to use a burnt cd, but it won't even get into the terminal it just tells me i can't cache the Kubuntu CD right there on the spot. The Md5 Sum check checks out so the iso should be fine.

Here is my console, I had to delete the middle stuff to fit in the forum requirements.

Mine was the same. NO discs would cache but had disc 1 and disc 2 put on the card drive. However now Kbunutu CD will not cache  :-\ This is obviously a problem, can someone please help to solve it? ? ? ?

Hi,

Please bear with me...

If I understand correctly you have installed Kubuntu on your HDD (IDE or SATA?), and when you boot up, the Kubuntu login screen is presented.

You have copied the MCE CD disks 1 and 2 plus the Kubuntu CD .iso files to your hard drive (IDE or SATA?).

You login to Kubuntu, run the MCE installer, answer your configuration questions and tell MCE where the .iso files are located.

When it tries to download the Kubuntu files via the network it crashes with Installation Failed.

Are you setting up a Core or a Core/Hybrid?  Dual NIC's?

Have you tried other mirrors sites?

Thanks.

Ah I am so sorry for my bad grammar and sentences. I have everything installed on the SATA, its a hybrid. Only one network card, and yes I have tried at least 10 mirrors.

Hi,

Did you read this about Core systems and Core/Hybrids?

http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Hybrid

Since you have only one NIC you might want to look for single NIC posts.  It can be done but installing a second NIC is pretty cheap.

Look around the posts for single NIC's before you purchase something.  I run a dedicated Core with 2 NIC's.  Works fine for me.  My system operational concept leans towards a dedicated Core.  I made a Core/Hybrid it worked fine, but it had 2 NIC's.

Cheers.

Alright, I'm moved the set up into a different room with a better internet connection. I run the install steps again but I still get the "Failed to Cache the Kubuntu Live CD", nothing really seems to be working. Um, the wiki page on hybrids didn't give me much support, since I don't plan on adding other computers to this I don't believe my low standard computer will be that much of a problem.

I don't know what you mean necessarily about the single NIC, I thought the second NIC was optional, and thus wouldn't interfere with my install.

Hi,

The wiki states...

Quote

Because it serves as the Core, it needs the hardware components of a core PC:

A fast processor with lots of RAM.
Large hard drive capacity, or an external hard drive, or a NAS storage device in the network or directly attached.
A TV video card.
A second NIC card for connecting to the rest of the home automation/multimedia network.
Obviously, you will need lots of expansion slots in a hybrid PC.

End Quote

One NIC connects to the outside world through your router/DSL/Cable modem.

The second NIC services your internal network based on the 192.168.80.X address generated by the DHCP server in your Core/Hybrid.

Some users have gotten the system to work with a single NIC.

One thing to suggest, non-NIC related, is to copy your MCE disks 1, 2 and Kubuntu .iso to CD disks (MD5sum verified) then copy the .iso's to your LMCE hard drive.

Then rerun the LMCE install and select have the .iso file, select the path.

You stated you had problems during the copy over of these disks from your NTFS drive.  It sounds like you copied them directly from the NFTS HDD to your LMCE HDD.  Maybe some corruption ocurred at this point.

Cheers.

My main point about how the wiki didn't help me is because as of right now I don't play at all to anything that will require the DHCP server, just this one computer that I plan to run in my appartment, nothing other than maybe 2 displays. I will go ahead and try to burn the cd's even though the Md5 sum check was working in the Kubuntu OS.

My install was making more progress until it died again with the same problem as before. This time I had tried just selecting the .ISO's directly from the NTFS Harddrive I use.

I have also copied over the Kubuntu Live CD via the CD as you suggested but I still have my problem with it. As of now I'm just going to try and download the LIVE cd again, it would be very helpful if anyone could give me a good tried and true bittorrent for it though.

I retried to install from my NTFS harddrive again, and it worked. So not really sure what the problem was :)

I continue to have the same problem that you report "failed to cache LinuxMCE Disk 1". Can anyone give more insights as to what this problem is and how to get around it? I have burned the 2 ISO files to CD's and I iinstall the install package on the Kubuntu 7.10 desktop. The system goes through about 15 minutes of caching the files to the disk and then consistantly gives me the "failed to cache" error reported above.

I have a:

500 GB SATA drive
PNY GeForce 4 w/512MB
2 NICs

Trying to set up a combined system on a single server.

Help!

Hi blakesle,

Have you tried to copy the MCE CD disks 1 and 2 plus the Kubuntu CD .iso files to your hard drive?

If not try that and then run the installer and point the browser to that disk location.

Hope this helps.

OK, It is amazing how a properly burned DVD changes everything. I tried to copy the CD's to the hard disk but they would not copy. They both errored part way through. I then downloaded the DVD iso and burned it at .5X. That seems to have done the trick. It loaded like a dream. It was a very clean load. Thanks.
