I assume it is black when x starts, but you can see the post screen as the pc boots.
Yes, that's right. I can see the post and all the text screens, but when x starts it goes black.
did you try running the avwizard after you rebooted.
I'm confused, can I run avwizard from a command line? If so should I boot into recovery mode and run it there?

other stuff I've tried:
copied xorg.conf from the mythbuntu installation to try to learn something from that. There are certainly some differences.
in recovery mode I've copied the ubuntu xorg.conf to use in this install (unchanged) then startx and it works fine. Then I reboot into standard (non-recovery) mode and I get the black screen; hit ESC to get out of what I assume is avwizard and it brings me back to an X login screen with tiny unreadable fonts. WTF???
I ran
envy on my mythbuntu install and updated the driver from .19 to .23. Everything seemed to work fine, no errors or problems. No discernable differences with the new driver.
