LinuxMCE on ViaC7 mbs w/ Unichrome graphics
« on: November 15, 2007, 08:12:53 pm »
I'm a mandriva user who bought a Via C7 based MB w/ Unichrome graphics set, to use as my PVR, only to find that Mandriva 2007 doesnt support that chipset.

I do know that Ubunutu can be successfully installed.

My question for the forum is, has anyone uccessfully installed LinuxMCE on one of these MB's with this chipset (and a Hauppage PVR150) using the DVD image?

I have a patch that SHOULD work for MDV, but since this will be a simple (for me) single use box, I would rather just be able to load and go.

Anyone who can help it would be appreciated.

I don't think the processor will handle the functions of a core...   you should be able to use it as a media director though

well, the core handles everything..  it's the backend server for linux mce...  it's the dhcp server for all your pc's at home (for full functionality of lmce), will hold your tv capture cards and serve all your media, will allow netbooting of media director pc's, and the database for everything...  the media directors can sit in the different rooms of your house and play media at each tv..  you don't have to even have an os on the media director as it will netboot off of an image on the core pc...

We have several C7 based MB's running 1-1.5Ghz processors with either CN700 or CX700M graphics chips... they work great as MD's under UI1 but are underpowered for a Core. We use the Unichrome Pro driver.

Wouldn't it be powerful enough for just a stand-alone hybrid?  I'm thinking without diskless media directors and all that a hybrid isn't really much more then a media director.  Then again I might be overlooking a few things.

Well there are people out there who run vdr or Myth standalone on very stripped down systems on Via hardware for sure. But our experience was that the performance was really sluggish when running lmce on this type of hardware. I guess it comes down to personalpreference and what is acceptable... some people might find the trade off acceptable.
