ATI video cards and video out (S-Video)

I've playing around with LinuxMCE on my workstation before I dive into spending money.  I have two ATI video cards...both with S-Video out.  During the console bootup and pre-X I can see images just fine on my Apex TV.  However when I start X and I can no longer see anything besides streaking on the TV.  I've changed the resolutions and everything I can think of with the Resolution Settings (Step 1).  I've changed the jumper from PAL to NTSC on one of my ATI cards and still having streaking and I can't even begin to see video.

Should I look at a NVIDIA card?  I don't care about spending the $40 for a video card if I know that's the problem...

ATI cards have been known to be tricky with render acceleration and 3D stuff (UI2 capabilities), but that's not the problem you're running into. Check the wiki.
