Will my cable provider work with LinuxMCE?
« on: July 11, 2007, 12:04:38 am »
I was wondering if Time Warner (Regular, not digital) Cable in the Cincinnati, Ohio area works with LinuxMCE. I heard somewhere that if they had encryption, LinuxMCE wouldn't work, and I don't want to have to call Time Warner and ask them if they have encryption. I would like to know if Time Warner works before I start saving up $300 dollars to upgrade my system for LinuxMCE.

Thanks,
Linuxman

As long as you actually subscribe to analog cable and you have an NTSC capture card (Hauppage PVR-150 for example) then it will work.  Most digital cable channels are encrypted with the exception of the local network feeds.  You will need a QAM capture card to record unencrypted digital channels.

Okay. I have analog cable, so all I will need, in addition to my cable subscription, is a NTSC capture card, right? I won't need a QAM card?

Right.  You don't need a QAM card.
