Resetting GFX settings

Hi I recently got linuxMCE installed.

I got it setup ok and ran the setup of the media director from another machine. I ran a dvd and it worked ok out of the box but i accidently pulled the power cord.

Now however the fonts on the main screen do not appear clear at all and the pictures on the screen saver do no move smoothly. Im wondering if i selected too higher setting for the UI i think it was the middle one.

Is there a way to set it to the lowest gfx settings?

Or try debug what is happening?

Right after a while the words on the screen came back, it was a little slow so i decided to reset and see if it would work normally.

After the reset the words were all blurred and not readable and the menus dont appear on when the mouse hovers over.

Any further ideas? Or is more info needed?

To change your UI you have to access the Web Admin (by typing your Core's IP in a browser) and go to the media directors section. You will find there the UI dropdown, and be able to change it to UI1.

OK i set it to UI1 and i can now see the menu headings text however when I hover over a menu item the menu pops up but its totally black its just a black box. Its kind of running slow too. I thought my machine P4 3.0ghz with HT and 512mb of ram would of been able to handle the basic settings.

Any ideas why the menus are all in black? I can really select anything either. There is the odd flicker of text in the menu but then it vanishes. Tried looking in the forums but nothing quite like this.

Anyone got any ideas?

Ahh good point I have an ATi 9550 256mb of ram installed on the system. I may be able to put a Nvidia one in but its only something like a 5250 or something. I remember it wasn't very good on the XP system I used it on.

Im not sure if i installed any drivers for the ATi card. It was a fresh system i installed it in so im guessing unless Ubuntu or LinuxMCE does there are no drivers installed for the card.

Would this give a problem?

i know that linuxmce installs drivers for ati but i don't know if they are the latest drivers. the other card, the nvidia is better supported under linux/linuxmce. you can install the latest ati drivers to see if it is any difference.

I will try the Nvidia card later today.

Is it going to cause lots of problems changing over? Im tempted to do another fresh install of it all with the Nvidia card in the machine.

What do you think?

May be easier in the long run.

you can only change the cards without reinstalling. after that, uninstall the ati drivers and install the nvidia drivers. then, run /usr/pluto/bin/Xconfigure.sh --update-video-driver.

Right i decided to reinstall Ubuntu and then LinuxMCE it all seemed to go ok but when I restarted after LinuxMCE had finished installing like it said i see the Ubuntu splash screen load up and then i get the message from my monitor

"Frequency out of Range"
I think the monitors max refresh rate is 75hz

Im not too sure where to fix this as im pretty new to Ubuntu and LinuxMCE

Im sure its something and nothing but im not very clued up.

Is there a config program i run? Is it the one in the preivous post?

PS i now have the nvidia gfx card installed.

Dont worry sorted it must of just been the installer that was out of range the actual setup thing has appeared now which is cool
