P4 2.5GB + HDTV3000 + Kodicom 8ch + HDHomerun + CM15A
« on: September 21, 2012, 05:27:34 pm »
I have a Pentium IV computer that had some busted capacitors on the motherboard, became unstable and as a consequence I had stopped using it. Recently, I purchased a capacitor to replace, did it, and decided to try to install Beta1. Turns out that I'm still getting some weird hardware problems, so I decided to replace more capacitors etc. Still, I thought my install experience might be useful to others. In particular, I had to restart the install a few times and in the end it seems that mySQL had not been properly initialized.

Because I'm having hardware problems, I haven't fully repurposed the computer for server purposes, so it is multiboot. The first attempt to install it as "headless core" failed, as the linux install was not usable, in that apt-get would not download even after adding more sources. Installing it as "mixedhybrid" screwed up Grub and could not longer boot. Rather than fix Grub I decided to install Kubuntu 10.04.4 and just download the script. Here are my logs:

1: How many physical rj45 interfaceable network cards do you have in the machine?

2: Have you tried the DVD?
I never quit... I just ping out.

I have the mobo connector at 100 (external) and I added a PCI Gigabit which I plan to use as internal.
I tried the Linux MCE DVD first as stated (headless, then mixed), then installed Kubuntu from its DVD.

Sorry for misreading your first post re: DVD install.

You are not chrooting or anything into this install are you? The net install does NOT support multiboot. That can ONLY be done with the DVD.

Nothing should screw up grub from DVD _UNLESS_ you are installing to a drive which is not the first in boot order. We explicitly prevent screwing with grub in this circumstance to avoid screwing up RAIDS etc. You will have to grub-install /dev/sd(x); update-grub after install. This can be done from the DVD prior to hitting the "reboot" button, by switching to tty2, running the commands, then switching back afterwards and actually pushing the button (do not just type sudo reboot).
