Headless 10.04
« on: April 14, 2012, 07:12:07 pm »
Gents,

I am running 8.10 as a VM and want to start testing with 10.04. After having numerous attempts it showed out that LMCE does not like the standard KVM Cirrus card (failed to set up X), the other available cards are tits up atm, due to a problem with seabios under KVM. The last resort, Spice, has its own problem as atm spice and 12.04b server are no friends.

Is there for a headless install really no need for X, and Sarah. If so where do I start the setup??

regards Han

Pigdog,

thx for the hint. That thread I had seen as well and I tried the headless install, but headless is not really headless  :D. Headless for me is having no X-server at all and this would mean doing the initial install ie users, myth or vdr etc from somewhere else.

regards,

I do not understand what you are saying. Either you want a headless install, or you don't. A headless install will never use graphics. Setup is done on the first media director when it is first booted. Anything else is a hybrid install.
I never quit... I just ping out.

Just to let you know. Install headless VM based core worked out of the box.

HP N40L with 8 Gb of memory, 12.04 beta server, kvm and vm has 2 virtio nics, 75 Gb image and 2 Gb of memory

On my first md (Foxconn Netbox 330i, 2Gb memory) after booting I was presented with Sarah. After running through the setup the MD is up and running happy. Without doing anything but pressing yes, no and so on.

This is really smooth after comparing what I had to do to get this MD up and running under 8.10  :P

If you guys call this Alpha I cannot wait to see Beta  ;D

Thank to all of the developers doing such an amazing job!

Headless just means "without local monitor", virtualized or not.
