The lowest end Panasonic should be fine.. .but you should probably look at their outdoor mounted cameras too.

should I assume that any IP camera will be accessible over the internet using lmce(if I need to check on them while on vacation)? or would I have to get one with its own server built in.

you're thinking way too hard.

The camera pictures can be accessible via the web admin, as well as from the web orbiter, or from your cell phone if you are running a mobile orbiter.

UPDATE:

I went with IP cameras, and boy have I had lots of trouble.  Most vendors will say they support "JPG" and then you discover that it is actually MOTION jpg video, so no good for LMCE unless it also also can push to a FTP site or something with its own motion trigger event.

I found a nice page, its a bit outdated but it shows whether cameras support "Still JPEG" or not (Which is what LMCE uses):

What IP cameras did you go with...hopefully you searched the wiki first?  Linksys Wireless-G Internet Video Camera WVC54GCA was Plug-n-Play and sell on ebay for cheap though I got mine at Frys.

Ill have 1 in 5-7 days and let you know if it works out of the box in a similar manner as the linksys camera  =P

I have the linksys cam mentioned above but it is terrible in low light. This camera (whether it works with LMCE or not) will work good in place of a video baby monitor for my wife, plus it gives me an excuse to get it. Can only be used so long to watch the baby, plus I get to use the Linksys camera for other things.  =D

I sure will, although dont expect a lot other then if I could get video working or not in LMCE, I'm still a Linux Novice.

Well instead of 5-7 days, they fed-ex'd it to me with 3-day and a Sat delivery to boot, cant beat that mistake huh?

I will not have a Core up until Monday (hardware just arrived) night to actually test with as I wasnt expecting this for a few more days.

Looks like the stream location is: /cgi-bin/sf.cgi

Short summary pre-LinuxMCE

Pros:
This camera puts the linksys camera to shame! The amount of configuration available is amazing!
Video quality compared to the linksys camera is like night and day, literally. Not to mention that it is able to look around the room. The video image is encryptable (not sure how this will work with LinuxMCE) if you wanted extra security against eve-droppers(128-bit AES).
It supports email and ftp connections to save images\recordings to, along with a built in CF slot. It will do this based on preset triggers from motion detection or from 1 of 2 inputs from other devices. There is also an output to trigger other devices. Uses on\off functionality via these connections.
3 levels of access admin-full control, user-view video and move camera, guest-view video only. you can upload a custom logo to the cameras internal website.
Built in IR lights for night vission

Got this line out of it, so those linux guru's might be able to connect and do some stuff.

Vilar IPCamera's OS is based on Linux 2.6 kernel, running on no-MMU CPU. The HTTP server is BOA.

Cons:
Instructions are terrible and is almost a picture book for kids. Shows a pic for each setting page but does not provide infor for them. Help from within the setup page instructs you to look at this manual. The link provided for support does not work: http://www.vipcam.cn/techsupport/
On the video in the upper left corner is the wording "ipcam / 00:00:00" Im assuming this should be the time, but it is static 0's

Overall I'm considering buying several more pending if it works with LinuxMCE. It seems like a mistake priced for $89.99, especially compared to the linksys at $119.99. Its dark here, but here is a sample vid in a pitch black room: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aTYyiUa0StE (just uploaded so give youtube some time to process) ill try to do one in daylight tomorrow, but i might not get around to it with the holiday. The purpose of the cam here is so my wife can view the baby (3-months).

did you get the ipvillar IPCAM works ?
I buy one but I can't make it work.
There is a problem with authentication, Im using the instruction at the wiki page http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/IPC-1002.

Have you got a live stream working in a web browser? I'm not talking about the camera admin page here, I'm referring to literally just the stream in a browser window.

I got live stream in a web browser. There are 3 types of apps inside it's internal BOA web server (ActiveX, JAVA, and Push).
I usually used push with mozilla and works, and I think that it's Motion JPEG and not still JPEG.

Take a look to this part of the webcam log. It's like it is continually downloading a file?....LMCE spects a .jpg picture and its receiving something more, like a video....

But I read that the IPC-1002 cam supports both types of streams. I can't get information in order to change that kind of transmition.
Also, I found that the camera has some internal paramitters but i didn't touch them at this time.

Is there another kind of template based on motionJPEG ??
