Dianemo 1.3 iOS Orbiter Released
« on: July 20, 2011, 10:47:12 am »
Hi all,

We pushed v1.3 of the Dianemo Orbiter App out on Monday and 'magically' Apple approved it yesterday. A record time-scale in our experience at least! The 1.3 App is now live on the App store.

v1.3 adds support for iPod Touch 1G's and iOS 3.1.3 and also implements a number of gesture improvements and other small bug fixes.

All the best

Fantastic work!

My only question regarding ongoing work is - Is there any room for improvement on load times / responsiveness? I have both RoamingOrg and Dianemo on my iphone, and I find myself torn between the speed of RoamingOrb and the "flash-y-ness" of Dianemo.

Thanks,

Dave

Well we think there is some scope for improvement there. 1.3 is about 10% faster than 1.2 and we do think there is more to come too.

The big difference is the way the screens are transported and currently we use the same method for both local and remote access. That's one are where we plan some improvements we may revert to the original protocol for local access which has less overhead.

Anyway take it as read that we are working on that aspect and you will see updates in the coming weeks that address this.

Hope you enjoy the new App!

All the best

Hi Andrew,

As always, great work!
I can confirm its faster, but as you said there is room for improvement ;)

Uplink made some notes on some ideas i have about the way information is presented,
are you guys going to implement them?
If you want me to make a mockup of those ideas pls, let me know.

Hi Raybe,

By all means do that.

However the purpose of the Interactive layer in the new App is to allow users to get a better UI experience without having to do anything to the Orbiter Skin they are already using. We see the Interactive layer as a kind of 'stepping' stone to something that is more like the work golgoj4 is doing on his QML Orbiter.

If your talking about the App's internal iOS UI layer then yeah if you have some cool ideas we'd like to see them too.

All the best

Hi Andrew,

Check: http://www.flickr.com/photos/63116537@N03/with/5973269839/

I made 1 with a iPad and 1 with a iPhone resolution.
I made the fontsize of the attributes roughly the same as the overall fontsize.
For the iPad version you could show even more attributes if the fontsize was made smaller,
on the iPad it would still be very readable.

Also the coverart is much better viewable and comes more to its right if you would show only 6 above each other.
Since flicking the screen goes really fast, 2 less showing isn't noticed too much.

In my honest opinion (and i don't want to step on anybody's toes or hurt ones feeling :) ) making the fontsize as big as you did makes the app look less professional.
It deserves better, since it is a very professional app

Raymond

Hi Raymond,

The fontsize was based on actual customer feedback so I guess eveyone will have their views on that. We do plan to have a font size option in the settings screen in a future update so this would have some user configurability to it.

Thanks for the UI ideas. As far as I know all the UI changes your experimenting with can be achieved in HAD and do not require any App changes at all. That's exactly the way the interactive layer was designed to work... it allows you to build enhanced UI's with minimal or no UI skin changes and/or no changes that are specific to the interactive layer per se.

So as far as i can see you could go ahead and use HAD today to create your new screens or a complete new UI skin and the TouchOrbiterQT http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/TouchOrbiterQt and the Dianemo iOS Orbiter v1.3 to display them with no App changes whatsoever.

All the best

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for the reply.
Just that i understand this correctly,
When i change the screens in HADesigner and add more attributes, your iOs-app will pick that up and show it onscreen?
But, will i also be able to set the fontsize and number of thumbnails? otherwise the added attributes will 'fall off the screen' or 'not show'

Raymond

Yes our App will receive xml data from the enhanced proxy_orbiter running on your Core. Its the enhanced proxy_orbiter that returns an xml representation of the datagrids to the iOS Orbiter or any TouchOrbiterQT based Orbiter in fact. Currently and for the foreseeable future the fontsize is determined in the Interactive Layer by the local App and not the proxy_orbiter and currently the Interactive Layer media layouts in Touch Orbiter are single thumbnail per row. We are intending to allow the user to change those settings in the iOS Orbiter in a future update however.

All the best
