GMA500 GPU
« on: July 16, 2009, 05:03:06 am »
Has anybody tried one of these?

If so, how did it work, I can't find any hits on this GPU on the whole site.

These are fit in what they call the fit-pc2, a very nice small PC with a nice configuration
Here is a comparison on the GPU chipsets

                                  GMA500                  GMA950
Chipset                        Intel US15W            Intel 945GSE
Clockspeed                   200 Mhz                 250 Mhz
Max Memory Band (GB/s) 4.2GB/s                 10.7GB/s
Max Shared Memory       256MB                    8-224MB
Vertex Shader Model      4.1                         2
Pixel Shade Model          4.1                         2
Pixel Pipelines                2                           4
Unified Shader Procs       4                           N/A
Hardware Vertex Shaders Yes                       No
OpenGL                         2                          1.4
Dirext X                         10.1                     9.0c
MPEG-2 Acceleration     VLD+iDCT+MC           MC
VC-1 Acceleration         VLD+iMDCT+MC+LF    N/A
AVC Acceleration         VLD+iMDCT+MC+LF     N/A

Looks like it would be "alright" if the hardware decoding is active.

Thanks,

Richard

The problem is the driver.
There is no good driver available at the moment and we also need to patch xine, mplayer in order
for them to take advantage of hw video acceleration. Also, there is no multichannel output (if I remember correct) on the fit-pc2.

We've looked at the GMA500 and i'm afraid it does not look like a viable route right now....

Also see this very interesting analysis of the GMA500's Linux driver; http://www.happyassassin.net/2009/01/30/intel-gma-500-poulsbo-graphics-on-linux-a-precise-and-comprehensive-summary-as-to-why-youre-screwed/

A great pity as if there was a truly open driver for this GPU it would be a really very interesting option indeed.

All the best

Thanks for the answers and link, if the drivers are right it would make a nice "cheap" MD for older TV's with just component hookups etc..

But, I'll just spend a little more and have the MD's future proof, I am looking for at least 720p out of these boxes, I don't see the big difference between 720 and 1080 anyway. Maybe on a 65" screen, but anything below say 50" I am not going to worry about it.

It seems there has been some progress for this chip. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1213340

Not necessarily where it needs to be, but better off than before, or so it seems to me.

Hmmm...well it still looks to be a long way from a production system. I would recommend going for one of the many Atom/Ion based machines for the time being.

I have a fit2-pc and i am checking daily for an answer.

currently there is a repo for 0804 to get the fit working with the accelerated drivers.

As soon as there is a repo for 0810 I will be testing it.

Any progress on this?

I have just picked up a few of these fit-2pc machines and there really nice.

The ones I got have a 1.6 atom processor and built in spdif digital output.
