Can't access web admin
« on: January 30, 2010, 08:51:21 pm »
Hi All,

I've successfully done an internet install of LinuxMCE 8.10 following this guide (http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Installing_0810) after having some problems with the DVD installation.  I've successfully completed the AV Wizard and House Setup wizard.

However, I can't access the LinuxMCE Web Admin interface from my notebook via the LAN.

After installing Ubuntu, I installed OpenSSH and was happily accessing the LinuxMCE computer via SSH until after I completed the LinuxMCE installation, now I get a "connection timed out" error if I try and SSH to the server.

On the server itself, I've run ifconfig and confirmed that it has obtained a valid IP address from my DHCP Server (my IPCop firewall box) for eth0 (192.168.1.188).  From the LinuxMCE box, I can ping my IPCop firewall.  If I run nslookup dcerouter on my laptop, I get the correct IP address back.  However, if I try and ping dcerouter or its IP from my laptop, the pings time out.  If I try either http://dcerouter/pluto-admin or http://192.168.1.188/pluto-admin, I get a connection timeout error.

When I look in the Apache access logs, there's no evidence of any requests coming in.

I suspect this is some sort of wierd networking problem, but I don't know what to do next to diagnose the problem.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Cheers,

Rob Hills

Can you access from linuxmce itself? What about the internal network 192.168.80.***? That will be from your 2nd nic. I cannot remember if web-admin works on outside network from default but in web-admin wizard (one of the menu's I'm not at home so cannot check) is outside access link try ticking box for port 80 and try again.

Have a hunt on wiki for more info and security issues of doing this.

Hi, the default web admin address in 0810 is http://192.168.80.1/lmce-admin.

Have you got your network setup where the linuxmce is the DHCP server, as Kezza said check the wiki's for the correct network setup as that is where the most problems come from, Users decide not to have two nic's and go for a non standard setup.

If you have two nic's with one going direct to your internet and the other nic to your home network all will work fine. One other thing you want to check will be the network configuration page of the web admin of course once you can access it, to make sure eth0 and eth1 are the correct way around

Hi Kezza,

Can you access from linuxmce itself?

Yes, after my post, I worked out how to get to the web-admin on the linuxmce box itself and I've got the login page to come up.  Unfortunately, I can't log in.  I can get a console on the linuxmce box (eg with <ctrl><alt><F2>) and login that way with the username and password I used during setup, but the Web Admin console won't accept that username/password combo.  I don't recall adding any different username/password during any of the installation processes.

What about the internal network 192.168.80.***? That will be from your 2nd nic.

I've not tried that yet.  That NIC (eth1) is actually faulty.  I have a replacement for it, but I haven't swapped it in yet - I wanted to get a few more things working before I did that.

I cannot remember if web-admin works on outside network from default but in web-admin wizard (one of the menu's I'm not at home so cannot check) is outside access link try ticking box for port 80 and try again.

Have a hunt on wiki for more info and security issues of doing this.

I really want to be able to administer the linuxmce box from my home network anyway rather than the linuxmce internal network if I can.  I have my own dedicated firewall (ip-cop) between my home network and the Internet anyway so I'm pretty comfortable with the security side of things.

All I need now is to work out what my login is for the web-admin so I can try ticking the box you mentioned.

Thanks for your help so far,

When you went through AV Wizard you specified users. The user's name your created is the web-admin login and password ie user 'Bob' web-admin login is 'username = Bob' 'password = Bob' I think it is case sensitive as well.

Hey Rob,
You can access the web admin from anywhere, I set the options so I can access it outside through port 9000 using a dedicated port or otherwise the default is port 80 so it will depend on your setup as to which one you use. I use port 9000 as I already have a dedicated web server on port 80 for our home page.

Outside
http://your_ip_address/lmce-admin or if you are using another port rather than port 80 then you would need to change it to the following example http://your_ip_address:9000/lmce-admin where 9000 is the port you have specified in the outside access page of web-admin, this would then have to be port forwarded in your adsl modem router as well. For internal on any pc just use http://192.168.80.1/lmce-admin with your login details as per Kezza's post.

Hope this helps
Cheers

Hmmm, I guess I'll have to re-run that wizard again then.  I was quite certain I created two users, (myself and my wife) and mine was just the same user name and password I used for the Ubuntu login when I initially installed that.

Does anyone know where LinuxMCE stores the users created by the AV Wizard?

Cheers,

Hi Beeker,

Thanks for the reply and the details.

Unfortunately it doesn't!  >:(  If I understand you correctly, I don't have to make any configuration change in order to be able to access the linuxmce box via the web admin interface on the standard http port (80).  In my case, my home network uses the 192.168.4 subnet, so my linuxmce box has the IP address 192.168.4.101 (given to it by my firewall DHCP server).  If I run ifconfig on the linuxmce box, it tells me that eth0 has the IP address 192.168.4.101, so that all seems fine.  From that box, I can ping my firewall (192.168.4.1) and my laptop computer without any problem.  However, if I go to my laptop, open a browser and put in http://192.168.4.101/lmce-admin, I get a pause for a number of seconds, then a timeout message.  Similarly, if I try and ping 192.168.4.101 from my laptop, the pings time out.  I've done quite a bit of java web development in my time and I have web apps running on several computers in the house (some are on port 80 and some on port 8080) and I can access any of those from my laptop or my linuxmce box so something strange is happening to traffic going into the linuxmce box - it's just getting swallowed.

I need to see if I can dig out a spare hub, or a crossover cable or something I can plug into eth1 to see if I can get anything on 192.168.80.1

Cheers,

The LMCE firewall will block access to the webadmin from outside the LMCE network.  You will have to open the port (80) in the firewall settings of LMCE in order to access the webadmin from outside the LMCE network.  This is done from the webadmin so you will have to make these changes from webadmin on a machine on the internal LMCE network (192.168.80.XX).  Then you should be able to access webadmin from your other machines (192.168.4.XX)

Hi Rob

Here are the instructions to get outside access: http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Outside_Access

From memory you cannot specify the password for your users in AVwizard it gives you a default password same as userid. The Ubuntu login will NOT work in web-admin unless you have created another linuxMCE login with same details.

Not sure where it stores users (presuming you meaning in database?) but if the system is starting up then on the screen will be a persons name. Try using that in both username and password and see if have any luck.
