Combine LMCE with non-LMCE MythTV station?
« on: December 18, 2009, 04:00:32 pm »
Hi all,

Is it possible to combine / connect 0810 LMCE with a non-LMCE machine running MythTV?
In other words, the 'other' MythTV machine would be running e.g. 0904 with MythTV, this would not be a PXE boot MD.
Can LMCE be connected with such a 'stand alone' Myth machine, and have its recordings in it's mythconverg database?

Why would I need this?
At the moment I'm completely stuck because I fail to get my HVR-4000 card to work with either Myth or VDR on 0810 LMCE.
I'd hate to lay aside such a nice dvb card as the HVR-4000.
It is possible to make it work with 0904.
I would then put the HVR-4000 in another machine and configure it to work with LMCE's Myth-backend.

Hope this is doable?

Erwin

Yes you can certainly do this. Just configure additional secondary or 'slave' MythTV backends (all must use the same version of MythTV) and point those at the MythTV master backend running on the Core. Mythbuntu would of course be a good choice... you can even mix Mythbuntu 9.10 with your LinuxMCE-0810 installation...just make sure all the Myth versions are the same.

The simplest way to do this though is to just add an MD and attach some tuners directly to it.... this them becomes a slave backend to the Core's master backend. If you dont want to use the 'MD' as an MD but just to host additional tuners etc this works fine.

All the best

Andrew, thanks for your reply!

Sounds good, but I guess I will have to keep doing somemore  testing.
Myth 0.21 on 0904 plays out of the box with HVR-4000 2nd frontend.
Guess I will have to try 0.22 on 0904 then...

Is there a way to keep LMCE 0810 using myth 0.21 instead of 0.22 that you know of?

Thx,

Erwin

Try MythBuntu 09.10 as that runs Myth 0.22 out of the 'box'... use the Slave backend option in MythBuntu setup.

I have tried this once with 7.10 on a more recent version of Mythbuntu. I however got into the situation where the Mythbuntu station upgraded the backend database of the 71.0 installation, which after that never worked again like it should. Don't know if there is a way to avoid those unwanted upgrades, but make sure you have a backup before foolin' around  ;D.

There was a posting from someone else mixing LinuxMCE and Ubuntu. IIRC he said that one should use a special Avanard repository , not release.
