use dvr card audio input as trigger

some dvr cards have an audio in for multiple locations.... could this be used to trigger an event?

Not looking for full voice control, but just.... if there is a sound coming in ------> do this.
I'm looking at this from a security standpoint, probably triggering all lights to come on and emailing/texting/calling my phone when it happens.

Is this already possible in the current setup, if so where do i look to set this up...
