Screen Refactored: Call in Progress
« on: August 20, 2009, 07:45:56 pm »
Hello everyone,

As I use the media director phone every day, I've been systematically improving its UI.

One of the big problems with the original Call in Progress screen was that the keyboard at the bottom was completely useless.

I have since removed it, replaced it with a number pad, and re-positioned existing objects on screen to something a bit more aesthetically pleasing. The dial pad during a call will emit touch tones to the call, allowing for navigation of voice prompted menus.

Here are some screenies:

And a little demo video:

Enjoy,
-Thom

Nice job Thom!  The layout you came up with looks much more usable.  I have one suggestion which would make this even better, and the good news is it's quick and easy!  :)  Have you thought about placing letters on the number keys like a hardphone would have?  I have found that calling some customer service numbers like 1-800-DIRECTV can be quite difficult if you can't remember which letters are on which number.  For example
  1     2      3
       ABC  DEF

  4     5      6
GHI   JKL  MNO

...you get the idea.  Anyways, looks great!

yeah, i'll do that when I can. The numbers on the pad are graphic images, so they can be replaced. I will have to make a separate set for the security panel...

it may not be a bad thing to use the same buttons for the security pad. people may want to use a word for a code or something. something to consider anyway.

By what Thom said before about the numbers are images. Has there been any thought about allowing templates to be made for all the images? Like for different themes and such. I understand this might not be on the top of everyone's list but it might be something to think about.

I have done some work to support pictures for contacts, as suggested by the call in progress screen:

hopefully, these are self explanatory. I still want to do some refinement later.

Enjoy,
-Thom

Great work Thom :-)...love it!

...text wrapping & placement in buttons etc needs some re-thinking (no a critique of your screens at all...it just reminded me of how hard it is to get the text layout looking 'right'...in many cases it is this one single system wide limitation that people most often pick us up on...we must fix that so that new UI work like yours can 'shine')

All the best
