UPDATE:Shuttle SG33G5 Pro HDMI install issues
« on: April 24, 2009, 07:52:48 am »
Hi everybody, new to linux and linuxmce.  Just installed it on my HTPC,  have some issues that I would really appreciate some input on

FIXED -In AVWizard, I cannot set my display to 1080P, only 1024x768. It works, but I want 1080P

FIXED -During the installation wizard(with the "sara" videos) I can hear the audio but cannot see the video, the small box where the       video would be displayed is black. All the buttons and such are there, but no video, just audio.  I mention this because I think it is part of a bigger problem.

FIXED -after all the wizards are complete and I am at the home screen, it flickers constantly to the point of being unusable.  I went back and adjusted refresh rates and have had no success, it is difficult to even open the menu to select TV or media

-No HDMI audio.  I know, I have read up on the subject, but some pointers for me to try to get it to work would be greatly appreciated ;)

My resolution is currently set at 1024x768 using the High end alpha blended UI.

NOTHING has been modified outside of a standard install and what I have listed here, like I said, the system is hardly usable, I cant even configure it to watch TV at the moment

System Specifications are as follows

Shuttle SG33G5 Pro (integrated intel GMA 3100 video via HDMI port) Intel G33 Chipset
Intel E2160 Dual Core at 2.0 GHZ
4GB DDR2
Happauge WinTV HVR1600
LG Blu-Ray Drive
250GB Seagate Hard Drive.
Gyration Remote
DVD Install of LinuxMCE(followed all the instructions from the wiki pages)
TV: LG50 42"

any help would be greatly appreciated. I really look forward to experiencing LinuxMCE.  If I cant figure something out I am gonna have to try out MythBuntu and see if I have better luck

restart the AV wizard, and re-set it to UI2 Masked.

As Thom said .....

Blended is only supported on nVidia GPUs, and even then most people do not use it because of tearing. Either way, you would be FAR better to get yourself an nVidia card as this hardware is much better supported.

Thanks so much for the response.  Been "out of the office" for the past week, sorry for the late reply.  I will switch it back to option UI 2 and see how that works.  Will Post up results very soon.

Ok, got it running pretty smoothly, went with a fresh install after doing a few tweaks.

The only Issue I have now is the HDMI Audio, I have been reading up on all the different issues but I would really like suggestions on where to start to see if I cant get the issue resolved. The whole point of going with HDMI is to minimize the mess of cables in my entertainment center, and the very reason I went with the shuttle sg33g5 pro.  Again, any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE: I went into alsamixer last night and made sure everything was unmuted.  The chipset is Identified correctly as an HD chipset, and audio is identified as "SiliconImage HDMI".  I searched and could not find anything regarding how to properly use alsamixer, I didnt see a save settings or anything in there.  I will do some testing tonight and see if simply unmuting some of the chipset features fixed the problems, but simply didnt have time last night.

Is there a guide somewhere to Alsamixer as well as how to access the xorg.conf file? I have been searching high and low and have not found anything.  Again, some of the things you guys already know about the basics of linux are completely new to me, so something like a dummies guide to editing xorg.conf and setting alsamixer up would be very helpful.  Thanks again for all the help so far.  I feel I am making slow but steady progress toward my goal of HDMI audio.

Most commands you can type

man <command>

from a terminal to access the manual, so type man alsamixer

To edit files, I use the joe text editor, which needs to be installed on your system, so type..

sudo apt-get install joe

Once installed you can edit text files by...

joe <filename>

For the xorg.conf file you need to be superuser to edit it, so...

sudo joe /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Again, to get instructions on joe...

man joe

And there is a very useful help screen in joe accessed by hitting CTRL-K then H

Went in and changed use EDID to true in 2 places (TV and Video Card section) saved and rebooted.  Is there anything else I need to do to have this setting take effect?

I also went into the KDE desktop, went to media, clicked on Kmix, enabled everything and unmuted everything.  went back to the console and checked alsamixer again and ensured everything is unmuted.  Chipset is properly recognized, IEC958 is good, everything looks to be right.

Im thinking I missed a critical step after editing the Xorg.conf file.  Do I need to run the AVWizard again? Thanks so much for all the help everyone, im getting closer!
