PCI error when starting install with DVD
« on: December 04, 2008, 11:27:14 pm »
I downloaded the 7.10 rc2 iso DVD and burned it to a DVD.
I have a compaq P4 1.7 Ghz with 256Megs ram and an 800 Gig drive on IDE plus DVD writter installed.
Also in the box is an Hauppage PVR150 card and a Ethernet NIC card. There is an Ethernet NIC on the motherboard as well.
I get the initial Kubuntu splash screen and then the three options.
After I select the install option the DVD drive starts along with the hard drive and then I get the following two messages on the screen:

[   50.580790] PCI: Failed to allocate mem resource #6:1000@fe000000 for 0000:01:00.0
[   51.273689] Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(104,1).

The funny part is that I have Kubuntu 7.10 loaded and running without a problem on the machine.

Can anyone help me out with this as I'd really like to get LinuxMCE loaded on this machine as my core.

Cheers.
Glenn.

cant give you any specific help, but it seems that 90% of all install issues can be traced to the dvd being used, whether its faulty media or burned to fast...etc
not saying this is the case for you, since i havent seen that error before but you might try another disk. Also I have had to just keep restarting the install before and that has worked for me.

Thanks Krys, I've burnt the DVD twice. Ran the data verification after burning and they were both fine. I've tried starting it at least five times with the same halt.
I loaded Kubuntu 7.10 that I downloaded from the Kubuntu site. Put that on and tried loading the CD version. The instructions say to use the Kubuntu Package Installer, but that doesn't exist on the current distro, only adept installer. It loads the CD#1 somewhere but doesn't create the LinuxMCE icon on the desktop as the instructions say it should. So I have no idea if the installer is set up correctly and even where it is.
This is why I decided to go with the DVD as it is supposed to do it completely. Thought that might be the better approach.
I'm not new to this as I've had KnoppMyth up and running for two years with both a Master machine and a Slave. It all worked fine. The Compaq was infact my slave as it was faster than the Master and produced good video.
So, I'm very puzzled about getting this going.

Thanks again.
Glenn.

Problem solved, but not great.
It turns out that there is a flaw in the kernel for unbuntu 7.10. This is a known bug and won't be fixed until Ubuntu 8.10. so it won't reflect through until LinuxMCE 8.10 is released.

The bug is based upon the PCI memory sharing and the documentation can be found on the ubuntu forums.

The fix is to revert back to LinuxMCE 7.04, which works just fine.

Good news is that 7.04 loaded and is working.

Cheers.

A URL to that bug report would be useful... Is it specific to your motherboard or BIOS? I can say that we have seen any Kernel issues like this at all.

Happy New Year!

I'll research the URL again and post it.

I'm using a COMPAQ EVO 1.7Ghz machine and from the sounds of the bug report it is :http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=782788&highlight=pci+allocate+memory+resource+error

Here is another one that applies particularly to those running AMD motherboards and have Linux memory problems but Windows runs fine:

The PCI ID in the first error message suggests that it is a plug in card (rather than an on mobo PCI device) that it is griping over. Do you know what that card is? Can you simply remove it for now? Perhaps your second NIC card?
