XBMC as core of media playback?
« on: June 05, 2010, 11:07:46 am »
Hi,
I'm really impressed by LinuxMCE but one component I see as dated, and it is not fault of LinuxMCE but of upstream project. That component is MythTV. There are a lot of users who don't need recording just great media front end, and that is what XBMC is. I have tested all media center for playback of media and for me XBMC has no competition.

XBMC is also modular and backend playback can be xine, mplayer maybe even VLC, not 100% sure about last one.

Hope I get my 100k from LinuxMCE business as soon as possible so to sponsor this feature ;)

EDIT: some of you have missed smiley face in the last line, and no, I currently don't make any money on LinuxMCE but would love to start a home automation business and then also help this project with donations in code and money.

Do you have a license from Pluto?

If not, you are probably in violation of bundling hardware and LinuxMCE software together.

With that said,

If you can control XBMC, you can make it a player. Study the MythTV Player and Plugin, and the Xine Player and PlugIn source in SVN.

No, don't whine again about how you're not a coder. If you want this feature, you do it.

I'll be writing Pluto an email when time comes, hopefully soon. Does anybody know how does the Pluto licence work? Do you pay per unite sold, per year?

Thanks for the info.

Hi Valent,

Pluto is no longer in business having sold its software technology to a 3rd party. According to the founder of Pluto the new owner is not in the business of offering licenses of any kind to the original Pluto code. As far as i am aware my company is the only company in existence that holds a license to the Pluto software technology (Fiire Inc having ceased to trade last year). We currently have no plans to offer software only licensing of our Cascade or Dianemo software. We only supply our distributors, partners & reseller/installers with complete Cascade or Dianemo systems.

I hope the above clarifies the issue of commercial licenses.

All the best
