Network Hard Drive not picked up on MCE
« on: May 22, 2008, 08:49:45 pm »
Hello,
I am a total noobee when it comes to this and I have only been using the system for about 4 days.

I have a very simple system running at the moment, and I am using a single computer (Hybrid). I have my entire network (2 laptops, a Voip, and the NAS) on the MCE network.
The MCE was able to find my 2 laptops and find the media files, but it did not find the NAS. I can access the NAS from the laptops (using Windows).

Is there any way to use the Plug and play option here? any way to manually do it? Most of my media is on that hard-drive and I really would like to be able to use it.

thanks,
-Dov

Is the NAS set to DHCP or does it have a static IP assigned?

Is your NAS getting its address by DHCP? You could look in the DHCP file (/etc/dhcp3/dhcp.conf I think?) and see if the DHCP server has handed out an IP address. If so, then you should find a device in the device tree that represents the NAS. Dunno why it couldn't connect, but you could try setting username/password details in that device, or switch between smbfs<->cifs in the filessystem type field...

EDIT: oops Zaerc got there first!

The NAS is on DHCP and is in the network (Ip address is 192.168.80.*).
Now that I think of it - I think it picked it up once and then after that I was not able to find it again.

Is there any way to set it manually? or to reset it? I tried turning it off and on again but that didn't work.

thanks for the quick replies

Hey,

This wiki page outlines what to do if you have ignored the device at some point;
http://wiki.linuxmce.com/index.php/Howto:_Using_Network_Shares

Recommend using linuxmce structure if you can as well, or at least if you want to be able browse via folder (filename). Though setting the attributes of all media and using filters is probably better in the long run.

Cheers,
WR.
