newbie questions - vdr, other application
« on: March 10, 2008, 01:11:51 pm »
Hello,

I am completly new to Linux mce, and I have some questions about possibililties.

I have one vdrbox running with streamdev plugin enabled.
I have a second pc without dvb device, and that's receiving the streams from the vdrbox and show them on a lcd tv screen.

I would like to run linuxmce on that second machine.
I saw that linuxmce can now be used together with vdr. My question is, can it also be used on a machine without dvb device by receiving a stream ?

On that second machine, I am also running a mega slideshow (16000 pictures), so my tv screen is used as an electronic photo album in my livingroom.
Can linuxmce handle a big slideshow by scanning directories recursively ?
If not, I found a small application (feh) that does that very well. Can I start an external application from within linux mce ?

Thanks for your help, and congratulation fro the linuxmce that seems very nice.

Currently the vdr config inside LinuxMCE assumes that the Core will have the DVB cards and will act as the 'server' for the TV streams. Then the MD's (ie the client machines) can then access live TV and recordings from the Core and therefore do not require any local DVB devices. Live TV functionality for MD's is still being worked on at the present time however.

As to slide shows... there is not slide show application at present so adding your application would be interesting! However the PhotoScreenSaver will handle the random display of images stored on your Core or attached drives and will display those images across the MD's attached to your system.

Hope the above helps

Thanks for your answer.
That means I should change my vdrbox machine to linuxmce.
That machine is also running other applications like amarok or backuppc, and I am a little bit scare of changing everything at once.
Do you know of it is possible to run linuxmce inside a virtual machine (virtualbox or vmware) ?
I presume it can, the only thing I am not sure is of the PCI devices (dvb card) can be accessed ?

thanks,
