Alright, I may revise my statement to instead say that the ethernet only version of this drive does not seem to be an ideal candidate

okay that is where my confusion came from, I have the 500GB USB version, I didn't know there was a ethernet only version...
like JimmyGos, I just reformatted into ext3 and plugged it in...

Well, that's the difference between world and essential edition.

BUT, I have now had my ethernet WD up for 2 days without any kind of trouble. Just wanted to say that. I am now running 7.10b4, my last try was with the 7.04. I do not know why, but my previous problems are gone :-). I have played movies from it (but just short bits) and transfered about 200GB to it and it has never disappeared from the network.

 My SPDIF is even working so now, so I finally have the opportunity to use this great system!!
amd64, asus A8N-SLI, 2gb ram, 500gb sata ++, nvidia 6800.
TV: Sony KDV-50E2010
nad 761 DD/DTS reciever via SPDIF

Well that's promising.  I'm on b3 right now, perhaps after the upgrade...
