Lirc and the Aopen EA65
« on: November 09, 2005, 02:29:57 pm »
I've got an Aopen EA65 that I'm using for a media director. It seems to work fine except for the remote.

The EA65 has a built in IR receiver that basically just sends the IR codes down the serial port.
This receiver is supported by LIRC through the use of the 'ea65' driver (which appears in the drop down list under Infrared Receivers in the media director settings).

However, with this selected, when the MD starts up, it complains about not all of the devices starting up correctly, and the remote doesn't work.

The log for the ea65 device on the MD shows:

Code: [Select]

moon1:/var/log/pluto# tail 50734_LIRC_DCE.newlog
10      11/08/05 9:01:05.599            LIRC button: fastforward will fire: 0 -106 1 203
10      11/08/05 9:01:05.599            LIRC button: Forward will fire: 0 -106 1 203
10      11/08/05 9:01:05.600            LIRC button: Rewind will fire: 0 -106 1 202
10      11/08/05 9:01:05.600            LIRC button: Pause will fire: 0 -106 1 190
lircd: no process killed
10      11/08/05 9:01:05.608            Running modprobe lirc_dev
10      11/08/05 9:01:05.617            Making hardware config
01      11/08/05 9:01:05.617            No SerialPort selected and no default entry found. Exiting.
Return code: 0

I've also had to add a new remote control, as it didn't seem to exist in the database. I grabbed the config file from another EA65 machine that runs Myth, with which the remote works fine.

I had a chat with Dan about this and he said:
Quote

dan: this is using a different driver
dan: so, you don't have a driver for ea65
dan: this is the problem

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Cheers,

Just a quick update - by running lircd manually on the MD with the config file I entered in for the device, I can confirm that the remote is actually working:

Code: [Select]

moon1:~# lircd -H ea65 -d /dev/ttyS1 lirc.conf
moon1:~# irw
00000000001e8101 00 enter EA65
0000000000198159 00 up EA65
00000000001a811c 00 down EA65
0000000000498155 00 9 EA65
0000000000478150 00 7 EA65
00000000001f8109 00 play/pause EA65
0000000000228118 00 rwnd EA65

Here you can see that I've started lirc, ran irw, then pressed a few buttons on the remote control.
Given this, I assume it shouldn't be too hard to get it to work with Pluto? I just have no idea what to do next.

I guess my other issue is, how do I know what names to assign to each of the keys? I assume I should just look at the values used by the Microsoft MCE remote and rename the buttons on my remote accordingly?

Also, are there any keys that aren't present on the MCE remote that Pluto pays attention to? ie, from the MCE remote config, I can't see a button for 'eject' which is present on my remote.

Hi,

I'm interested in this HW MD. Can you please post how does it behave under Pluto (diskless boot, remote contol, tv tuner&capture for mythtv, etc....)....

How silent it is and how do you like it ....

Thanks in advance,

regards,

Rob.

Rob,

Being a standard PC, it works fairly well.
Network boot works fine with a standard Pluto install, however I haven't managed to get the wake on lan stuff to work yet. I haven't looked into this, but I suspect it should be fixable.

The onboard graphics card works fine, I've got it connected to a projector running at 1024x768.

As for the audio, I'm using the SPDIF output (coax) connected to a Sony receiver. It seems to work ok for playing back music and dvds, however every now and then, the sound drops out for about a second (this could happen say, once every few mins). I'm not sure where the issue is here, but I'm going to try the optical connection instead of coax to see if that helps.
I also had to manually run alsamixer to play with some of the settings before the SPDIF would work, despite selecting the appropriate output in the MD configuration.
I would also like to get the 5.1 audio for DVDs and digital TV to work, as at the moment the MD is only sending out PCM stereo.

From my previous post, you can see that the remote works fine, and it has all the required buttons, including ones to select dvd, cd, tv, etc. I still can't get it to work with Pluto (hence the post - I hope one of the Pluto guys can help me out here).

Previously I've used it as a Mythtv frontend (before installing Pluto), and it worked great for that.

As far as noise is concerned, I'd say that it is acceptable for lounge room use. When idle, it runs about as silent as a PC can whilst still having a fan. Just make sure it has a bit of space around it or the fan speed will increase and make a little more noise.

I've also managed to get the 9 character VFD to work on the front by modifying a driver for lcdproc. I did this for my previous Myth installtion, but at that stage, a single line LCD for Myth was useless (and probablly still is). Ultimately I'd like to see Pluto scroll the current track being played, etc, to help with using the MD without the need to start up the projector. However, this is a slightly longer term project as I've still got a lot to setup with Pluto - I'm sure you know that it is quite a time consuming project :)

Anyways, hope that this helps and that someone can help me to get this remote to work! :)

Cheers,
-Kent
