Device priority??
« on: January 08, 2008, 05:31:34 am »
Lets say I set up a core and Have only one capture device hooked up to my satellite box.. Lets say that I am watching that on my TV in my bedroom. Now lets say someone in the living room tries to watch a program though that MD (most likely on a different channel) from that same satellite box. What would LinuxMCE's default behaviour be?  Is it first-come-first-serve in this situation?  Or will the MD in the livingroom steal my satellite box device and leave me with no stream?  Is there a way to set a priority for a device on a room-to-room basis? (I.e. priority_of_satellite_box_in_my_bedroom=1, priority_of_Satellite_box_in_livingroom=2, etc...?)

thanks,

Jon

This is more of a MythTV question.. but I'll answer it here..
If you are watching LiveTV (most likely via Myth) and another MD (of myth client) attempts to use that tuner, Myth will tell the second client that all tuners are being used, and ask if it wants to 'watch' the current program being tuned.  (That last part is in the SVN of myth, I don't know if it's in .20)

So, LiveTV clients are all on a first come first serve basis.

That being said, Recordings DO have a priority..  If you are watching a show, and Myth needs a tuner to record a different show, it will ask you what to do... (on screen)

(I'm not sure how VDR will handle this, I assume very similar)

Ok thats what I thought - thanks.

Now another question.. Now say that I have 2 capture cards and they are both hooked up to satellite boxes..  If I am watching live TV on one of the capture cards, and someone else on another MD tries to watch it, will LMCE suggest that the other capture card (not being used) be used instead?

AGAIN, this is more related to MythTV...
yes, sort of...  it WILL use the other tuner, it won't 'suggest' anything.  The Tuners are used as required.
If you have 5 tuners, you could watch 3 live, and 2 recording, or 1 live, and 4 recording, whatever...

Yes, and no...  These questions are more accurately answered in the MythTV docs...

Not that we won't answer them...
Personally, I'd go to www.mythtv.org and look at the wiki or the online docs..

Myth TV has a wonderful wiki online..

maybe that should be stickied/FAQed where people will see it then. i know there arent many forum admins but im sure theres plenty worth putting at the head of it all. im sure most people just see it as part of linuxmce and dont even really mythtv is its own entity at all. most of these people havent ever even used linux....and some...i question general computer skills period. maybe a thread with a list of the different pieces and their web site/forums would be helpful....i.e. ubuntu/kubuntu, asterisk, mythtv or vdr. so people know there are other places to look and get questions answered besides only here. i know it doenst hurt to do research on ones own....but the information has to be somewhere for them to find it....whether its here or somewhere else.
