Pioneer VSX 908RDS

My receiver does not have a serial port, but it does have control in/out minijack... Can this be used?

It looks like this is some kind of IR control with some 'weirdness' done to it. I read around the net and it seemed that special equipment has to be used / created.

About three years ago I wanted hookup/control my sony reciever to my computer.
I found a danish company that build a custom black box with one ethernet and several control lines.
The box could control both Pioneer and Sony equipment.
Unfortunately a hd crash ruined all links and info, and I have been unable to find anything about this product after that.

Pioneer and Sony use the same type of interface two connect their equipment together but with different protocols.

From what I understand you can connect DTR to an rs-232 port and use lirc with pioneer protocol to control your device from a computer.
I have not tried it yet because of no time. Whish a day had more than 24 hours.

after doing some googling, I found out:

The control in and out are unmodulated IR codes inversed.  5V signal is Low, and 0V is High.

One COULD interface this with LIRC if they wanted to dig hard enough.

If you're having intermittent problems with IR, then maybe this is a path to look at.
it's not a serial port, so there will be external hardware involved.

I have a VSX1015TX with the same port, but the USBUIRT seems to work just fine for me.  I don't think I'd get any benefit in a 'physical' connection.

One nice feature is that it's designed to also pass unknown signals.. so you could 'hide' a emitter on a device, and then 'hardwire' that device to the amp.

Hmm.

Maybe one should try on my VSX1016 (european model). Using a cable is much more reliable I believe at least if you have your reciever in a rack behing frozen glass or a door. My electronic skills is far back in my head now. 12 years since I worked with any.
I believe the circuit I presented in the link and the one ddamron presented accomplish the same.

That circuit is pretty basic..you should be able to build it all into a DB9 jack.
