wintv-pvr usb2 issues
« on: April 13, 2007, 02:03:56 am »
OS: Ubuntu 6.10-i386
Motherboard: stock motherboard that came with a compaq presario 8000, Havn't been able to find any info on the exact type
Videocard: Geforce fx5700LE
Tv tuner: Wintv-PVR usb2

I successfully installed Linux MCE following all of the installation instructions as well as the basic process taken in the What to expect page.
The installation instructions made it seem like this tv tuner should work pretty much right away.
When I plug in the tuner it says that the drivers are installed and all, I have signed up with Data Direct to send all of my cable channels and such
but when I try and run the TV under media, myth tv starts and then it just goes black.
I'm guessing this is mythtv crashing?

I'm a fairly big linux noob so I'm not quite sure what to check for to make sure the tuner was actually installed correctly and that mythtv is working correctly, nor do I have much of an idea on how to figure out why mythtv would be crashing if that is what is happening.

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated...tell me if there is any other info that I need to provide

yup...3?

edit:would having an error with HAL starting up effect anything in linuxmce? cause i get an error everytime starting up Ubuntu
I noticed that the serial number is :/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/usb_device_2040_2400_2401_00_008463A1
..which has HAL in the pathname
the log file for HAL according to the plutoadmin device tree says:
Code: [Select]

yep did that
keeps doing the exact same thing whenever i try and go into tv

i can get mythtvfrontend to run from the terminal on the ubuntu desktop
but whenever i try and tell it to watch tv it says that it is unable to connect to the mythtv backend
when i try and run the backend and then look at the log it tells me that it is having errors connected to the mysql database
So i'm thinking that the problem my be with the backend

what ip adresses are suppossed to go into the dcerouter address box and the master backend server address box
My linux machine isn't running a dhcp serve, at least i told it not to, and the ip address for this machine on my home network is 192.168.0.15   but the internal ip address is 192.168.80.0
so which address needs to go there?

thanks for all the help so far

there must be addresses in the same class as 192.168.0.15. for example 192.168.0.16, 192.168.0.17.

ok
Now I have gotten the mythtv-backend running
I've got other problems now though...In doing the steps that the link you posted suggested I gave mysql a password that has to be entered everytime to log in to it, but when linuxmce is starting up I guess it doesn't give mysql a password when trying to log in and I get a bunch of :
Code: [Select]
ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)while it is trying to start up and the startup eventually stops completely while trying to start up the dcerouter

When I run the mythfrontend by itself everything starts up fine and it is apparently able to connect to mythtv-backend, however i think that mythtv is crashing everytime I try and watch the television because I just get a black screen immediately and I have to forcequit from mythtv in order to close it. The log tells me this:
Code: [Select]
2007-04-15 14:48:04.115 TVRec(1): Changing from None to WatchingLiveTV
2007-04-15 14:48:04.351 TVRec(1): HW Tuner: 1->1
2007-04-15 14:48:07.468 Unknown video codec
2007-04-15 14:48:07.483 Please go into the TV Settings, Recording Profiles and
2007-04-15 14:48:07.484 setup the four 'Software Encoders' profiles.
2007-04-15 14:48:07.484 Assuming RTjpeg for now.
2007-04-15 14:48:07.485 NVR: Error, unknown audio codec
2007-04-15 14:48:07.606 NVR: Won't work with the streaming interface, falling back
VIDIOCGMBUF:: Invalid argument
So I need to take a look at my codecs apparently..but where is the tv settings?

any idea in how to make linuxmce to start up?

thanks again for the help

it's like everytime I get something to work...something else stops working...anyways

linuxmce still won't start up, however I have gotten my videocard drivers working
mythtv seems to be able to log into mysql-server without a password so I'm not sure what linuxmce's problem is since it is not giving it a password either.

And now for one of the big problems: /dev/video and /dev/video0 seem to have disappeared so i can't even use the tuner
It shows up in ubuntu's device manager, usbraw.device under the advanced tab it says it is in /dev/bus/usb/004/003
the device manager seems to know exactly what it is but I guess it is not longer installed correctly
I have tried pointing mythtv straight to this address but that doesn't work...it fails to probe

I've gone to: http://www.isely.net/pvrusb2/pvrusb2.html and tried using this route for installing the drivers but the fwextract.pl script fails to extract the drivers...so I'm about to do the manual method of extracting the drivers...

this whole thing is taking a lot longer than i though it would, but I am definitely learning my way around linux pretty quickly just going through all this

if anyone can possibly help me with the mess i am now...then THANK YOU
