I am having a similar problem with alc883.  If i follow this http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php/topic,5539.0.html i get beeps at boot.  there are drivers specific to your card which you can find here.  http://lxr.linux.no/#linux+v3.2.19/Documentation/sound/alsa/HD-Audio-Models.txt
it would seem that your card is not listed tho.  i have not had success so far with messing with the alsa config.  also open alsamixer in the terminal and make sure the output your using is not muted.  i cant tell you anymore than that.  if you find a solution please post it.

so apparently i am stupid, disregard what i said.  sound should work with the alc883 on 10.04 out of box.  I had my tv plugged in DVI to HDMI on an HDMI input from an 8500 GTX.  Well my tv doesn't support audio coming in analog while plugged in to a digital input... DERP. :P
